As NIL is still a newly evolving topic in the sports world we are witnessing history in the making.
Back in 2021, the NCAA voted to suspend prohibiting players from profiting from their name image, and likeness. This allows athletes to maximize the benefits and opportunities provided to them through their image. Fans can only wonder what effects will NIL will have on current collegiate recruitment processes. Currently Duke in Kentucky or two programs that have the top two recruiting classes in 2023. The University of Kentucky just secured five-star Justin Edwards the number 2 prospect ranked on ESPN.
Justin Edward chose the University of Kentucky over Tennessee on CBS Sports this past week. Justin join the blue bloods recently stating in his interview that he wanted to “follow his dreams” as he always wanted to Play for the University of Kentucky. Justin also said that he is excited to play for the University of Kentucky and he will be able to “play his true game as well as work on his weaknesses.” Edwards played for Imhotep and averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds. It is evident that these top schools have leverage over players and their decisions in their commitments. Many players want to play for organizations and programs that have historic backing and can provide a winning collegiate career.
University of Kentucky’s success
The University of Kentucky may be able to secure the number one overall rated player in the class of 2023 as DJ Wagner is nearing the end of his recruitment and is narrowing down to Kentucky or Louisville. Both schools are Great programs currently rebuilding for the next season and Louisville currently is in a transition state with their coaching situation I believe the University of Kentucky will be a better fit for Dj Wagner and Kentucky would have secured four five-star recruits matching rival Duke University who currently have four five-star recruits as well. Number one recruit DJ Wagner currently has a NIL deal with drakes Nike sub-label NOCTA, and knowing drakes ties to the University of Kentucky and John Calipari it is seeming that Dj will end up committing to UK.
Leverage over the rest
Programs with a higher recruiting class have a stronger chance of winning regular season games as well as going far in postseason tournaments. It is interesting to see the impact the NIL is currently having on players in their decision-making in the recruitment process. Teams with more leverage and NHL capabilities have greater opportunities to recruit better players, therefore, impacting the collegiate game. Currently, there are no sudden impacts that NIL has had on the collegiate sport of basketball but time will tell what changes are made in the future. Some fans may have reservations about NIL and its impacts on college sports but like many things, time will tell the outcome of NIL and the impact it has on the game. Until then I will keep a close eye on the collegiate world and monitor current events.
