The long wait is finally close to being over. College basketball is less than a week away from starting. Last season was a lot of fun.
Gonzaga were the top team all year long, as they were on a quest for being undefeated. However, they faced another juggernaut in Baylor in the National Title game. Now a lot has changed.
Several teams that fell off last season are looking to regroup. Some teams have taken a step back. There are going to be some new faces that we need to be prepared for.
The storylines are varied. Here are the top three ones for the upcoming season.
3. Is Memphis All Hype?
One of the most talked about teams for this season has to be the Memphis Tigers. There are several reasons for that. One of them is their head coach, Penny Hardaway.
Hardaway is a legend of the game as a player who garners respect and admiration. Then there is the new wave of talent coming in. Their recruiting class was on the level that we have seen from the titans of college basketball.
They were able to snag top prospects, Jalen Duren and Emoni Bates. In addition, they added a few more top 100 recruits in Johnathan Lawson and Josh Minott. Memphis also grabbed a former four-star recruit in the transfer pool in Earl Timberlake
However, chemistry might be an issue. Furthermore, Hardaway has been a solid coach thus far, but can he build a winner. The hype train is real, as they are ranked 12th, but are they going to be legitimate contenders.
2. Coach K’s Last Stand
The most recognizable face in all of college basketball is by far Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. He has been the face of this sport for three decades now. This season will be his last.
Last season was an awful one for him. Duke missed the tournament and even had a star player leave the team midway through the season. Now, they are potentially back.
Wendell Moore Jr. is back for the Blue Devils, while star recruits, Paolo Banchero and A.J. Griffin, are ready for their potential one-and-done season. Can Duke win one last tile for Coach K?
1. Gonzaga’s Revenge
One more win is what stood in front of Gonzaga becoming the first team to have a perfect season since 1976. However, they ended up getting run off the court by Baylor. This season is all about revenge.
Gonzaga lost some great players, such as Jalen Suggs and Corey Kispert. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have any talent left. In fact, they added.
Anton Watson, Andrew Nembhard, and Drew Timme are all back from last season’s team. Then they were able to land the number one overall prospect, Chet Holmgren. This team is loaded.
The revenge tour begins next week. Perhaps an undefeated season is not on the table, but a National Title is the end goal.
