• Notre Dame is 8-1 and 3-0 against ACC teams.
  • UVA has never beaten Notre Dame in three attempts.
  • Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong is a Heisman candidate, though an injury could hold him out.

The #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish are on upset alert this weekend when they travel to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. Most of UVA’s upset hopes hinge upon the health status of quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who has not played since suffering a rib injury a couple of weekends ago. After very sly remarks from head coach Bronco Mendenhall, it looks as if Armstrong’s status will not be known until moments before the game.

#9 Notre Dame Preview: The Luck of the Irish

Notre Dame is currently 8-1 with a lone loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats over a month ago; since then, they have won four straight, outplaying their opponents while still showing some vulnerability.

The biggest problem for this Irish team is their quarterback situation, which has fluctuated for most of the season; Jack Coan appears to have emerged as the main man in recent weeks, however, taking nearly all of the snaps in ND’s last three games.

Their defense, while talented, has been very hit or miss, alternating between allowing six, 34, 16, and 29 points in the last four games. This is a unit that depends very greatly on momentum, meaning that they will have to get off to a hot start if they want to slow down the high-octane Cavalier offense, especially if Armstrong is back under center.

Virginia Preview: Expect the Unexpected?

Make no mistake about it, the Cavaliers have little-to-no hope if Armstrong does not suit up; if he does, however, he will be restored to an offense averaging nearly 39 points per contest and that has scored 48+ in its last three games. Rib injuries are tough to plan for and also tough to deal with, so if he is not at full health, it will take quite the gutsy performance to get out on the field.

Putting Armstrong aside, UVA’s defense has been relatively shambolic against nearly every team it has played. The two ranked teams that they have played this season— North Carolina and Brigham Young— combined to score 125 points against their porous defense, meaning that it will not take much for Notre Dame to find the gaps in the defense.

UVA’s only real win condition is in a high-scoring game which, to be fair, would probably be what Notre Dame wants to avoid. So, expect the Cavaliers to try to move down the field in a hurry with no-huddle looks, attempting to run up the score rather than limit their opponents.

Odds & Free Betting Analysis for This College Football Game

Without sitting on the fence, all bettors should hold off until the pregame warmups are occurring and the status of Brennan Armstrong becomes public. If the Cavaliers’ gunslinger is out there, then expect him to carry the underdogs to a victory. If he is not, however, hammer the Fighting Irish with everything available.
