•  Critical Sun Belt Conference Showdown
  •  Both Teams’ Lone Loss was to a Power Five team
  •  Louisiana Lafayette’s Toughest Remaining Game

This pair of Sun Belt Conference teams come from different league divisions, are both 4-1 overall with each of their losses coming to Power Five opponents, and have aspirations of meeting again in the conference championship game. The difference is that Appalachian State plays in the East, which is currently led by 15th ranked and 6-0 Coastal Carolina.

Louisiana Lafayette is in the West and is the favorite to win their division, especially since they are the only team in Sun Belt who doesn’t have Coastal Carolina on their schedule. This contest against the Mountaineers represents, at least on paper, the biggest challenge for the Ragin’ Cajuns for the rest of the season.

Appalachian State Preview: Chasing Coastal Carolina

Appalachian State went toe to toe with a Miami team in Week 2 that was still ranked in the top 25, losing a back and forth affair 25 – 23 on a Hurricane field goal with just over two minutes left in the game. They are led t quarterback by Duke transfer Chase Brice, who is averaging 272 passing yards per game, and running back Nate Noel who adds 102 yards on the ground.

The Mountaineers are outgaining opponents 484 to 365 yards per contest and keep other teams off balance with an attack that averages just under 200 yards a game on the ground, with running back Camerun Peoples crossing the goal line a team-best eight times on the season. Defensively, they’ve picked off five passes but have also lost four fumbles on the offensive side of the ball.

Louisiana Lafayette Preview: Creative Title Addition

The Ragin’ Cajuns entered the season at 23rd in the polls, but a Week 1 38-18 drubbing by Texas dropped them out of the rankings despite their current four-game winning streak. Their last game was a 20-18 Sun Belt win over South Alabama, where Louisiana Lafayette jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first half and then held on for the victory.

Their offense and defense are mirror images of each other, with both of them gaining and allowing about the same number of yards per game at 395 for the offense and 407 for the defense. With the exception of a 562-yard outburst in a 49-14 win over Ohio, Louisiana

Lafayette has had trouble consistently moving the ball and distancing themselves from their opponents, even in a 27-24 win over FCS Nicholls State.

Odds & Free Betting Analysis for This College Football Game

Appalachian State is the better team on both sides of the ball, with a far more effective offense and a defense that can make it difficult for opponents to sustain much momentum. This is a bad matchup for the Louisiana Lafayette defense that is giving up an average of 171 rushing yards a game, so look for the Mountaineers to pound the ball all night long in a comfortable victory.
