Are you guys ready for our Bowling Green vs Tennessee pick and preview? Let’s kick it off with a few interesting facts!
- New Coach in Tennessee
- Bowling Green Trying to Break Eight Game Skid
- Romp Waiting to Happen
Tennessee parted ways with head coach Jeremy Pruitt and athletic director Phil Fulmer and brought in replacements from UCF in coach Josh Heupel and his boss Danny White. The Volunteers couldn’t have picked a better opponent to try to convince their faithful that they’ve finally figured this out.
Bowling Green hasn’t won a game or scored more than 24 points since November 2, 2019, and they bring back only three players from the 0-5 team that was outscored 57 – 125 in 2020 and 192 – 463 in 2019. Tennessee had great expectations entering 2020, but a six-game slide following two opening victories led to dissatisfaction with Pruitt, and eventually recruiting violations came to light, spelling doom for him and Fulmer.

Bowling Green Preview: It Can’t Get Much Worse
Scot Loeffler was a marginally successful longtime assistant coach who took over Bowling Green as the head coach in 2019 and has a total record of 3 – 14. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that someone who couldn’t manage offensive coordinator positions would have difficulty when he became the head coach at a program in serious need of an overhaul.
He insists that the team has added talent and the Falcons are on the upswing, but an opening game against a team desperate for a turnaround that added a serious head coach probably won’t tell us much about the progress Loeffler has actually made with the program. If Bowling Green somehow finds a way to score some points, they have a chance to cover the spread in Knoxville.
Tennessee Preview: It Wasn’t that Long Ago They Were 8 – 5
Pruitt led the Vols to an 8 – 5 record in 2019 with a Gator Bowl win over Indiana, but most of the players responsible for that successful season are gone and the offense was terrible in 2020.
Heupel was able to attract quarterback Hendon Hooker to transfer from Virginia Tech, and the experienced senior who threw for 1339 yards and ran for another 620 for the Hokies will be a good player for him to begin to build around, even if he’ll only be on the roster for one season.
Tennessee has talent and it remains to be seen if Heupel can leverage it enough in his first season to have instant success against a tough schedule, which includes Alabama from the SEC West and Pittsburgh in a non-conference matchup.
