We continue, here at KnupSports, our series looking at each of the Division 1 conferences as the College Football season gets closer. We will look at each team and their schedule and make a prediction for their end-of-the-year record. Today we feature the Independents that do not play in a conference.

Army Black Knights

This is a strange schedule with road games in the first half and home games to finish the year. Going to Oklahoma will give them a great test. Look for signature wins from the Black Knights and a 9-3 record.

The Knights are almost never home early, and they almost never leave over the second half of the year. The last true road game of the season is in late October, and overall, the schedule is a relative breeze, with only three games against teams that went bowling.
Realistic Best Case Record: 10-2
Realistic Worst Case Record: 7-5

BYU Cougars
The start is brutal with a trip to Arizona, home with Cal, and to Madison for a tangle with Wisconsin. Northern Illinois at home may save them a bit but look for the Cougars to end at 6-6.

Schedule
Sept. 1 at Arizona
Sept. 8 California
Sept. 15 at Wisconsin

Sept. 29 at Washington

Liberty Flames

Not much to hope for with this team. This is a messed up schedule when you play the same team twice in one year. Bad football ends at 2-10.

This year is about taking any wins the program can get, Getting New Mexico State twice is a weird quirk, and getting Norfolk State and Idaho State should bring a few wins to make the final count a little bit better. Three straight road games in November will build up the paychecks.

Realistic Best Case Record: 5-7
Realistic Worst Case Record: 2-10

Schedule
Sept. 1 Old Dominion

Sept. 8 at Army
Sept. 15 Norfolk State
Sept. 22 North Texas

Nov. 3 at UMass
Nov. 10 at Virginia
Nov. 17 at Auburn
Nov. 24 New Mexico State

Massachusetts Minutemen

The Minutemen open earlier than most teams with a home contest. Look for UMass to hit and miss all year and win games they shouldn’t and lose contests they should have won. The finish under the .500 mark at 5-7.

UMass starts early in Week Zero, and it ends with a trip to Georgia to collect some coin. In between, there’s a run of three straight road games in September, but going to Ohio and UConn after that isn’t all that bad.
Realistic Best Case Record: 7-5
Realistic Worst Case Record: 4-8

New Mexico State Aggies

There is some hope for the Aggies to have a good season. The opener at home with Wyoming out to be a good one but then on the road at Minnesota and Utah State may be tough. Look for New Mexico State to finish their season at 7-5.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Fighting Irish managed to get the biggest games of the season at home. That doesn’t translate into a sure victory but it gives them some reason to feel good about it. Michigan, Stanford, and Florida State will all be in South Bend. Notre Dame ends the season at 9-3.
