- Kansas Breaks 13 Game Losing Streak
- No Surprises for Coastal Carolina
- Coastal Carolina One of the Group of Five Frontrunners
Kansas broke a 13 game losing streak, but it came against FCS member South Dakota by a less than an overwhelming score of 17 – 14 for first-year head coach Lance Leipold. Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina also defeated a team from the FCS, but they were much more impressive in a 52 – 14 over The Citadel.
Last season, Coastal Carolina had what at the time was a shocking 38 – 23 at Kansas, but the Chanticleers went on to an undefeated regular season while the Jayhawks didn’t record a victory in nine 2020 outings that ultimately resulted, among other reasons, for the departure of head coach Les Miles and athletic director Jeff Long.
Coastal Carolina has risen to 17th in the AP Top 25 and 19th in the Coaches Poll after week one, putting them in second place behind 7th and 8th ranked Cincinnati in the race to finish the season as the highest-ranked Group of Five team.

Kansas Preview: A Program in Shambles
The Kansas fans stormed the field to celebrate a victory over an FCS school, proving how far the Jayhawks’ football program has fallen. However, it didn’t have that far to fall, since Kansas has only won 21 games since 2009.
New coach Lance Leipold comes to Kansas after six years at Buffalo, where he went 24 – 10 in the last three years with bowl wins in the prior two seasons. The good news for Leipold is that he inherited 15 starters from the 2020 season, but it’s hard to determine if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Coastal Carolina Preview: New Kid on the Block
For a school that has only been playing FBS football for just over four seasons, Coastal Carolina has made incredible strides. They not only defeated a beleaguered Big 12 team in Kansas, but they dealt a terrific BYU team their only loss in an 11 – 1 season in 2020.
This week’s clash with Kansas is the first time the team has been a big favorite over a Power Five team, so it will be interesting to see how they react to a situation where the Chanticleers come in as overwhelming betting preferences. They bring virtually everyone back from 2020 and if they run the table, have a chance to have a special year and Kansas is probably their next victim.

It’s easy to disregard Kansas and embrace Coastal Carolina as the new darling, but Leipold won seven Division III national championships in eight years at Wisconsin-Whitewater before heading to Buffalo. He’s a good football coach who has to instill a new culture in Lawrence and to date, he’s still undefeated and that 25 point line seems to be high.
