- Miami will be without quarterback D’Eriq King again on Thursday night.
- Miami beat FCS team Central Connecticut State 69-0 their last time out
- Virginia has lost two straight ACC games to open the season.
Very important swing game for both teams in Miami on Thursday night. With Clemson coming out of the games slow, the ACC is seemingly up for grabs.
Thursday night will be Miami’s first ACC game of the year, and gives them a chance to turn the page on an otherwise unimpressive start to the season.
Thursday will be Virginia’s second straight weeknight game as they were handled on their home field by Wake Forest last Friday night. Bronco Mendenhall needs a win Thursday to give his team a chance to make some noise this year in conference play.

Miami Preview: Change at the Top
With quarterback D’Eriq King’s status in question, Miami will likely turn to Tyler Van Dyke on Thursday night. Freshman Jake Garcia remains an option, but early indications are that it is Van Dyke’s job at the moment.
The presence of Van Dyke changes the Hurricane’s game plan, turning to a more traditional drop-back passing attack.
Even with King under center, the ‘canes offense greatly struggled this season. Miami ranked 100th out of 130 division 1 programs averaging 4.7 yards per play through their first three games.
Miami is coming off a 69-0 win over FCS program Central Connecticut State.
Virginia Preview: New Year New Team
Bronco Mendenhall’s Cavaliers have completely changed their philosophy this season. The defensive-minded Mendenhall has chosen to air it out this year significantly more than in years past.
— Virginia Cavaliers (@VirginiaSports) September 27, 2021
Although it’s still early, Virginia has moved from averaging 5.3 yards per play in 2020, to averaging 6.6 this season.
Quarterback Brennan Armstrong leads the attack and currently ranks second in the country in passing yards. His 1,705 yards only trails Fresno State’s Jake Haener.
Virginia lost last Friday night at home to Wake Forest by a score of 37-17.
Odds & Free Betting Analysis for This College Football Game
With regards to Miami, they have started the season 0-3 ATS and each of their three games against FBS opponents have hit the under.
Virginia is currently 2-2 ATS and only one of their four games has hit the over.
Although these two teams have combined to hit the over one time in seven games, I lean over in this situation. There will be public hesitation to take the over with the injury to King.
However, the ‘Canes should use a more pass-heavy attack on Thursday night, leading to more possessions on both sides and more points. The public uncertainty about the Miami offense leaves some value on the total.
Virginia also wants to air it out and is very comfortable playing in a high-scoring game. Two weeks ago Virginia combined to score 98 points in a loss to North Carolina (their last road ACC game).
