• Ohio State is competing for a playoff spot
  • Purdue has beaten two top-three teams
  • Both teams are tied for the lead in their respective divisions within the Big Ten

The Purdue Boilermakers will look to cause another upset this weekend when they head to Columbus to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes, the fifth-ranked team in the nation.

OSU is 8-1 this season and leading all of the Big Ten, while Purdue is 6-3 and tied for first in the Big Ten’s West Division. The impending matchup could drastically impact the national rankings, the Buckeyes’ playoff future, and the final conference standings.

Purdue Boilermakers: Brewing Another Upset?

Purdue has gone 2-1 against ranked opponents this season, beating #2 Iowa and #3 Michigan State, the latter just last weekend, despite not being presently ranked themselves. They also have a +14 scoring differential during these three contests, averaging over 25.5 points per game on offense while giving up 21.

Most of the Boilermakers’ production comes through the air as they are almost at 2,900 yards total on the year; Aidan O’Connell is responsible for a majority of this production, boasting 2,087 yards, albeit with a relatively pedestrian 12 touchdowns to eight interceptions. Comparatively, the ground game is responsible for less than 1/4 as many yards and five total touchdowns, showing the team’s dedication to the air.

Another strength of Purdue’s team is its defense, which has not allowed more than 30 points all season; they play with speed in the secondary and give their safeties lots of freedom to roam the field. This strategy has ultimately paid off, with the team currently ranking 27th in all of college football in yards per game allowed.

#5 Ohio State Buckeyes Preview: Top-Four Bound?

Ohio State is currently enjoying a seven-game win streak after falling 35-28 to #12 Oregon in the second week of the season. Freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud has been playing at a Heisman level, throwing for over 300 yards in five of his eight appearances thus far.

The main critique of the Buckeyes’ squad is that they are largely untested, having only played two games against top-25 teams, with a lone win coming against #20 Penn State. To their credit, though, they have been dialed in on both sides of the ball since their loss to the Ducks and are rightfully in the conversation as a potential playoff team.

Although Purdue is not ranked and does not have the same prestige as Ohio State, a win this weekend would be massive for the Buckeyes. Their upcoming rivals have shown that they can knock off top sides, so a win would keep their momentum going and also show the media that they can live up to the hype in pressurized situations.

Odds & Free Betting Analysis for This College Football Game

Realistically, it would be silly to say that Purdue is going to win this game— yes, they have had a nice season and two tremendous victories, but the overall talent and coaching of OSU combined with their winning streak make them the undeniable pick to win.

In contrast, however, spotting them nearly three touchdowns is a lot, and the Boilermakers should be able to cover their end of the spread. This game is likely to devolve into an all-out passing attack by both sides, meaning that both teams will score, but turnovers are likely to occur— specifically by the visitors. For this reason, Purdue should be able to come within 20.5 points as the game goes over.
