• South Florida Looks to Build on the First FBS Win in 18 Games
  •  East Carolina Needs to Finish the Game
  • Neither Team Plays Great Defense

Neither of these teams has had much success in recent seasons, with South Florida breaking a 17 game FBS losing streak by defeating Temple 34-14 last week and East Carolina coming off successive losses to UCF on a late touchdown, and Houston in overtime. Neither team will contend for the conference title but both are building for the future and a win this week would be a step in the right direction.

The Pirates are a couple of minutes away from being 5-2 instead of 3-4, but have had problems finishing games. Both teams played uncharacteristically sound defense in their most recent games, but the stars are unlikely to align again so this game is probably going to be more of a shootout than a defensive struggle.

East Carolina Preview: Better Than Their Record Indicates

At one point this season, East Carolina had a three-game winning streak and it could easily have been run to five if they’d figured out a way to finish against UCF and Houston. If this team learns how to close out games, they could get themselves into bowl eligibility and will most likely be the last regular-season opponent standing between Cincinnati and College Football Playoff consideration.

East Carolina has gained about the same yardage as they’ve given up in 2021 so they could be vulnerable to South Florida if the Bulls have actually figured out how to run the football, but the

Pirates were able to hold conference-leading Houston to 256 yards in total offense, so it could end up being a wash.
