The 2022 BET Awards are coming up, and there are some great nominations for many categories. The American award show will occur on June 26, 2022. It will be broadcasted live from Los Angeles on BET at 8 p.m. EDT.
The BET Awards are presented by the Black Entertainment Television network, and award black artists, athletes, and other celebrities for their role in entertainment over the past year. The award show started in 2001 and is still looked forward to by many to this day. This year, 18 awards will be given out.
The BET Awards include “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist”, “Best Male R&B/Pop Artist”, “Best Group”, “Best Collaboration”, and many others. Black artists in many different genres have already been nominated, and many of them will take home an award. Check out the top nominees for some of the categories below.
Sportswoman of the Year
Six women have been nominated for “Sportwoman of the Year”. They include Simone Biles, Candace Parker, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Brittney Griner, and Sha’carri Richardson.
Currently, Simone Biles sits at the top of the list with 1-1. Biles has always proven to be an amazing athlete, and performed well at the 2020 Summer Olympics in gymnastics. Although she pulled out of the individual all-around gymnastics event, she remained a favorite by advocating for the prioritization of mental health in athletes.
Candace Parker is behind Simone Biles with odds 5-4. The female basketball player has been the biggest name in the WNBA for a while, ever since she was the first pick at the 2008 WNBA Draft.
Sportsman of the Year
The BET Awards will also present the “Sportsman of the Year” award. Nominees include Aaron Donald, LeBron James, Bubba Wallace, Stephen Curry, Ja Morant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
LeBron James is currently the top nominee, with odds 10-17. This is unsurprising, as he remains to be a legendary player regardless of where he plays. With the nickname “King James”, everyone knows that he’s one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and is obviously deserving of this award.
Stephen Curry isn’t too far behind LeBron, with odds 5-4. Some call him the greatest shooter in basketball history, so don’t be surprised if he walks away with the “Sportsman of the Year” award.
Album of the Year
One of the most exciting awards to be given out is the “Album of the Year” award. This includes albums of all genres by both male and female artists, so it is truly a test of the greats.
This year’s nominees are An Evening With Silk Sonic – Bruno Mars, Anderson.Paak, and Silk Sonic, Back of my Mind – H.E.R., DONDA – Kanye West, Call Me If You Get Lost – Tyler, the Creator, Certified Lover Boy – Drake, Planet Her – Doja Cat, and Heaux Tales, Mo’ Tales: The Deluxe – Jazmine Sullivan.
Planet Her is currently the crowd favorite, with odds 1-1. This album is Doja Cat’s 3rd studio album, and it did extremely well on all streaming platforms. Quite a few clips from some of the songs also went viral on TikTok, so almost everybody has heard of this great album.
Writer’s Pick
This writer is a big fan of Doja Cat’s newest album, and predicts that it will take home “Album of the Year”. It’s a great compilation of Doja Cat’s work, and demonstrates incredible singing and rapping abilities.
