COD League Preview: Our First Major is Here!

Three weeks of league play has passed, and now starts the first $500,000 major tournament of the year. Teams were given points based on wins in their league play matches, and that is how the seeding was done before the tournament.

In our article today, we will go over the bracket and how the tournament will work, the seeding of the bracket, and make a prediction for how I see the tournament going.

Let’s dive deep into the COD League preview!

How does the bracket work?

The bracket for the major is a modified double-elimination bracket. The top six seeds made the winners half of the bracket, and the bottom six were placed into the losers. We call this a modified double-elimination because the losers bracket teams will only be able to lose one match before they are eliminated.

The six teams in the winners’ bracket will be rewarded for their positive start in their league matches by being able to lose a match and then being sent down to the losers. Once they are in the losers bracket, they will be able to fight their way back to possibly winning the major.

Bracket Seeds

Dallas Empire and Atlanta Faze come into the tournament as the #1 and #2 ranked teams. Empire will play the winner of Optic Chicago and New York Subliners. Faze will play the winner of Los Angeles Thieves and Los Angeles Guerrillas. That will round out the winners’ side of the bracket.

Optic vs. Subliners is one of the more interesting first-round matchups. The Subliners struggled to start league play, finding the sub for Zooma, but during the super week, they looked to have figured things out and played pretty well. The Thieves vs. Guerrillas should be a walk in the Thieves’ park, as the Guerrillas have not been too impressive.

In the losers bracket side of things, Paris Legion and Minnesota Rokkr finished as the #7 and #8 seeds to get first-round byes. The play-in games will feature Seattle Surge against Florida Mutineers, winner to face Paris Legion. Then Toronto Ultra to face London Royal Ravens, winner to face Minnesota Rokkr.

Predictions

After the first round of league play, it is clearly evident that top-tier teams and teams are still trying to figure things out. Empire, Faze, Optic, and Thieves make up the top of the classes. They are by far the superior teams when it comes to Black Ops, and it is shown with a combined record of 17-3.

New York Subliners and the Minnesota Rokkr are playing pretty good COD; however, they both suffered two losses to the teams previously mentioned. If they can find a way to make a deep run in the major, they could slowly work their way up.

London Royal Ravens and the Seattle Surge are clearly the bottom-tier teams in the league. With a combined record of 1-9, these two teams were lucky to even win a map in their league play matches.

If we were picking an overall winner of this tournament, it would be tough not to take the Atlanta Faze. They have been nothing short of dominant to start the League. I believe they will have their first true test when they go up against Optic Chicago again. They played earlier this season and were able to win 3-2. The winner of that match should win the major.

If there is a team out of the losers bracket that has the potential to make a run, I think the Toronto Ultra could be that team. They have struggled to start in league play, but they have the roster to make a deep run.

Final prediction, Atlanta Faze will win the major against Optic Chicago on Sunday.
