VCT Stage 2 2022: Copenhagen Qualifying Teams and Format

Esports article at Knup Sports

The reigning champions have qualified once again for VCT Stage 2. Check out who they’ll be up against.

Since their last meeting on April 24th, the world’s best VALORANT teams have been itching for another international title shot, which they might see at VCT Stage 2. With North America’s very own OpTic Gaming taking the home VCT Stage 1 – Reykjavík trophy, the title of “best region in the world” fell onto North America for the first time since the dominant Sentinels run in Reykjavík in 2021.

While the reigning champions have qualified once again for VCT Stage 2, some new challengers are approaching the podium with aspirations of lifting up the elusive VCT international trophy. Of course, there are some familiar faces as well; half of the qualifying teams for this event also appeared in Stage 1.

Just like in Stage 1, EMEA holds the largest number of qualifying spots at three. NA, APAC, and either BR or LATAM, hold two spots. KR and JP have a maximum of one qualifying spot.

VCT Stage 2 Formatting

Stage 2 is formatted identically to Stage 1. For those familiar with Stage 1, Copenhagen is intentionally structured the same way to make the viewing experience consistent and easy to follow. Although the rules are yet to be announced for the third, and most important, major event—VALORANT Champions 2022, the rules will likely be the same for it as well.

The team pool is divided into two sections: the low seeded teams and the top seeded teams. The top seeded teams are automatically qualified for the playoffs and have no influence over the group stage.

The low seeded teams, however, are not guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Those eight teams will duke it out in the group stage to see who will go on to compete in the playoffs. The group stage consists of two groups of four. The teams from each group will play two other teams in their bracket in a best of three format. The two teams with the best records will move on from the group stages into the playoffs. The bottom two teams are eliminated from the tournament and lose their opportunity to compete in the playoffs.

In the event of a tie, the two tied teams will play one another in a best of three tiebreaker to retain their spot in the tournament. The groups have already been decided and are as follows:

Group A

  • OpTic Gaming
  • Guild Esports
  • LOUD
  • KRÜ Esports

Group B

  • DRX
  • FPX
  • Northeption

The playoffs consist of three upper bracket stages, and four lower bracket stages. The winning teams from each group will be placed into the first upper bracket stage—upper quarter-finals—alongside the top seeded teams. The playoffs are double elimination, meaning a loss in the upper bracket relegates you to the lower bracket, rather than being eliminated.

All lower bracket matches are elimination matches, meaning a second loss will eliminate you from the tournament. All matches, excluding the grand finals and lower bracket finals, are best of three formats. The grand finals and lower bracket finals are played best of five.

The winners in the upper bracket will progress along the top bracket until they lose or reach the grand finals. The losers bracket winners will compete against the losers of the subsequent upper bracket matches. This means that the losers of the upper bracket quarter-finals will compete against the losers of the upper bracket semi-finals.

VALORANT Champions Tour 2022: Stage 2 Masters – Copenhagen kicks off on July 10th where DRX will take on Northelion and LOUD will take on KRÜ Esports.
