Tournament History


This event began in 1953 as the Desert Inn Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada until 1966. It moved over to the Stardust Country Club, also in Las Vegas, and was there for two years. It moved to Carlsbad California for thirty years and then relocated to Maui in 1999 where it plays at the Kapalua Resort Plantation Course.

It is the opening tournament of the PGA Tour for each calendar season and is only for golfers that won a tournament on the tour in the previous calendar season. It is stroke play with prize money of $6.3 million. The defending champion is Dustin Johnson.

The Plantation Course is a par 73 that is 7.452 yards. Let’s take a quick look at each hole.

  • Bryson DeChambeau is going to putt with the flagstick in as now allowed by the rules. He may be a tick behind them but can win.
