The Shell Houston Open is the last stop before the biggest tournament in the PGA tour takes place. Next week is the Augusta National which is billed as a “tradition unlike any other.”

The hottest and possibly the best golfer playing, Dustin Johnson, has decided to not participate in this. He will rest up for the big week in Augusta, Ga. Five of the top ten golfers will get a chance to win this event in Houston.

What is the course like?

This is a par-72 course that will play 7,457 yards at the Golf Club of Houston. This is the 15th season that is has been used as a preparation for the Augusta National. It features more than a few collection areas and lightning putting surfaces. It’s safe to assume that the greens will run at no less than a 13 on the stimp. With its wide fairways and forgiving rough, the course will favor the long bombers.

Players should be able to let it rip with driver off the tee without worrying about missing the fairways. Keep an eye on the par-4 12th this week; it’s an exciting risk/reward hole that’s reachable from the tee for most of the longer hitters. It sets up well to drive the green but anything pushed right will find the water.

Who Are the Top Golfers?

There are many golfers that can win this event and are not really good value picks for your betting. Jordan Spieth is the +650 favorite to garner the hardware, while Jon Rahm (+1000), Henrik Stenson (+1200), Rickie Fowler (+1400), Justin Rose (+2000), Phil Mickelson (+2000), Adam Scott (+2500), J.B. Holmes (+3300), Russell Henley (+3300) and Daniel Berger (+3500) round out the top 10.

Good Value Bets

Today I want to focus on a few longshots and why they might be in the winner’s circle after the event.

Matt Kuchar is a decent longshot pick to win the 2017 Shell Houston Open!

Matt Kuchar is a decent longshot pick to win the 2017 Shell Houston Open!

Matt Kuchar

At +4500 we find Matt Kuchar that has been steady with five top 25 finishes. He has come close in this event in the past and will be tuning his game for the Masters.

Russell Henley

Russell Henley has six top-25 finishes in 10 events this season. The reason to play Henley with +4000 odds this week is the fact he’s finished seventh or better in each of his last three trips to the Houston Open.

Jim Herman

Another longshot that could be great value picks are Jim Herman won the Houston Open last year. In 2012, he finished 14th and always loves this course. At +10000 this could be your guy.
