The 2018 Open Championship will take place at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland. This is the eighth time they have hosted this event with the last time being in 2007. The winner in that event was Padraig Harrington who hoisted the claret jug. This is a seriously difficult course.
Contender Status
Dustin Johnson enters the week as the odds-on favorite to win this event. He was favored last season, too. He has made eight cuts in nine attempts but has a bit lacking in the last several PGATour events. He had a lead st Shinnecock and lagged behind because of brutal conditions of the course and finished in 3rd place.
Matt Kuchar seems to be getting better. Since 2019 he has made 30 of 34 cuts and has finished ten Top 10 finishes. He finished in second place last season in this event. Yes, he is 40 years old but he has the game to win here.
Sergio Garcia came through to win the 2017 Masters with a playoff facing Justin Rose. He has a Green Jacket and can win here. If you follow the CBS computer-generated model, then you would know he has been predicted to win 4 of the previous 6 majors. Look for Sergio to finish short of winning the claret jug.
Our top pick to win goes to Tommy Fleetwood. He not only played well last year in this event but he followed that up with a strong showing at the Masters. He finished second at the U.S. Open after completing a blistering final round. Fleetwood owns the course record for Carnoustie with a 63. He is ranked tenth in the world and enters with three European Tour wins last season.
The next top pick that may knock off Fleetwood is Ricky Fowler. He has finished in the top 5 in majors eight times and is ready to win a Major. He has come close but we all know about finishing close. Can we discuss Tiger Woods? Wherever he goes, plenty of experts and novices alike will put him in the hunt to win a Major. I don’t see him coming close to the leaderboard in this event.
