This is Race 10 in the Stars and Stripes Racing Festival at Belmont with a 6:50 p.m. ET start.
This is a Grade 1 stakes race that has implications for the Breeder’s Cup. The intrigue to this race features two 3-year-old horse, Catholic Boy and Analyze It, with identical records on turf along with three of four wins on grass. This is race is a bit different as they race a mile and a quarter for their first time.
Let’s look at the nine horses in the field by odds:
Catholic Boy– Jockey Javier Castellano will be riding this horse which is the son of More Than Ready and is at 5/2 odds to win. As stated earlier he defeated Analyze It once but now the distance is longer and more arduous. It is possible they may take this horse to the lead at the start and try to leg it out for the win. Also, Catholic Boy has experience on grass and dirt.
Analyze It- Trainer Chad Brown has to be pleased with the son of Point of Entry and is currently 9/5 odds to in. The one career lose by this horse came in the Pennine Ridge race when Catholic Boy rallied to win by a neck. There was some concern but no inquiry was needed. This is the favorite to win.
Hawkish– At 5/1 odds, this son of Artie Schiller was the winner of the Penn Mile race. He won it by three lengths but now many questions if he can go a further distance without weakening.
My Boy Jack– This horse has won more money than any other horse in the field, His last race was a fifth place at the Kentucky Derby. After a long layoff, it is anticipated this is a warmup for the Haskell Invitational. Tough to gather it all together after a long time off. Odds to win are 8/1.
Hunting Horn– The odds to win for this horse is 10/1. He is the son of Camelot and most recently won the Hampton Court at the Royal Ascot. This is a strong field so we aren’t sure what to expect from this Euro horse.
Maraud– Whenever there is a Todd Pletcher horse, there is always a chance to win. This horse is listed at 12/1 to win. Also, it is possible he will like this distance as the previous mile races haven’t been to his liking.
Kingstar– The son of Evasive is 15/1 odds to win this race. This Euro horse hasn’t had much experience with only three starts. This will be the toughest field he has ever faced.
Channel Cat– This is another Pletcher horse that begins at 20/1 odds. The son of English Channel who was a great runner on turf. He finished third in the Pennine Ridge but not in the same class as the rest of the horses.
Encumbered– Last season he beat My Boy Jack twice but this year his star has faded badly. He finished fifth in the Penn Mile behind Hawkish. The son of Violence doesn’t appear to be ready for this kind of race.
Outside of the first three favorites, things aren’t very talented. Hawkish can run with Analyze It and Catholic Boy but the distance is further. Last time out Catholic Boy defeated Analyze it and I believe that happens again.
1st- Catholic Boy
2nd- Analyze It
