Cecil B. DeMille Stakes Betting Preview

By: Ace the “Horse Whisperer”

Who can say no to some Sunday racing from where the surf meets the turf, especially when there is a graded stake on the turf? The Cecil B. DeMille Stakes will be taking place this Sunday from Del Mar Racecourse and is carded as Race 5 going to post at 5:30 pm (ET).

This graded stakes affair will be on the turf course with the prize pool being a hefty $100,000. Only two-year-olds will be in this one, no fillies unfortunately, and they’ll be going a mile over the turf course. A solid field of nine will be running, and with such a big field, and the runners not having a ton of history, let’s cover a ton of possible contenders.

(3) First Peace- 5/1 Morning Line Odds

They needed three tries to break their maiden but they did it impressively last out at Santa Anita. They are coming in with the highest last speed figure and their workouts are quite consistent. Mike Smith hasn’t been riding a ton but is winning at a very nice clip of 20% and trainer Mark Glatt is winning in 17% of his graded stakes entries this year.

Blinkers are coming off this one, so expect this one to sit and pounce instead of go for the lead in the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes.

(4) Ah Jeez- 3/1 Morning Line Odds

This one was claimed after their last win and is getting leading jockey JJ Hernandez onboard to see if they can go back to back. JJ is winning at 30% and is jumping on for Leandro Mora who is only winning at 5% this meet, but is winning at 33% in graded stakes this year.

The speed figures aren’t that of a graded stakes winner, but they seem to be consistent enough to finish in the money and win if no one else shows up.

(5) Game Time- 6/1 Morning Line Odds

This horse also took three tries to break their maiden, but they have run second on this turf course previously. Umberto Rispoli is turning around his meet and does his best riding on the turf. John Sadler is winning at 18% in graded stakes this year. Speed figures are lacking though.

(6) Ze’bul- 5/1 Morning Line Odds

They have run once, and won once. The speed figure was pretty good first out, and they weren’t heavily bet. Maybe this one can repeat at this the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes?

(7) Speed Boat Beach- 5/2 Morning Line Odds

This one is going to be the post time favorite but I don’t think they will be competing here. Bob Baffert isn’t known for his turf training, only winning at 14% and this one did fall apart last out, albeit in the Breeder’s Cup Turf Sprint. I think this horse is going to go off at 4/5. No chance you can take those odds here.

Pick for the Race: (6) Ze’bul

There is going to be a ton of speed in this race, and I think Abel Cedillo can sit off the frantic fractions, and close home down the middle of the straight at a fair price. He will need to improve, but if he runs just a bit better than his last race, this one could surprise for the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes win at a price.
