The Bing Crosby meet is officially afoot with the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby highlighting some of the best in the world come here to show off their turf game. The Hollywood Derby Stakes will be taking place this Saturday from Del Mar Racecourse and is carded as Race 9 going to post at 7:30 pm (ET). This graded stakes affair will be on the turf course with the prize pool being $400,000. Only three-year-olds are allowed in this one, going 1 ⅛ miles over the turf course. There will be a nice field of eleven running, and with such a big field and the runners limited to a handful of racing history, we’ll have to highlight several horses with a chance.

(1) Cabo Spirit- 5/1 Morning Line Odds

This horse won a Grade 2 last out at Santa Anita and has won two races at this track. They’ve got some really good workouts coming in and have always been hanging and winning in the graded stakes level. There aren’t many Grade 1 races on the turf for three year olds so a Grade 2 win does make this one stand out. Jockey Joe Bravo is winning at 15% for the meet while trainer George Papaprodromou is winning at a better 19%.

(2) Script- 8/1 Morning Line Odds

This one finally found out that they are a turf horse with a nice win two back and lost by just a nose to another horse in this race last out here at Del Mar. They’ve got some darn good closing speed but will probably need a hot pace to run into to compete. Umberto Rispoli jumps on and does his best work on the turf. This is a big step up, but who knows?

(3) Celestial City- 4/1 Morning Line Odds

They are shipping in from the East Coast, where they won a Grade 2 last out at Aqueduct. Ramon Vasquez is getting onboard and is winning at 16%. Shippers usually do run well when coming into Del Mar. They are also a perfect one for one at this distance.

(8) War At Sea- 6/1 Morning Line Odds

Money Mike Smith may have another Grade 1 on his hands with this one, as they took third last out in a Grade 2 to SlowDownAndy by one length, who has shown their versatility on both dirt and turf. Speed figures fit even though they haven’t won a graded stakes just yet.

(9) Wit- 7/2 Morning Line Odds

This horse is a multiple-graded stakes winner but on dirt. They’ve run quite well on turf recently in their last three and have lost to some really good turf horses coming in second twice. Flavien Prat is the best jockey here and is jumping on board here. Todd Pletcher must be super confident shipping in this one from New York.

(10) Speaking Scout- 6/1 Morning Line Odds

You’d think the horse that took second in the local prep for this race would be a second or third choice, but not in this affair. They lost by just a half-length as the beaten favorite in the Grade 2 Twilight Derby. JJ Hernandez is winning at 30% this meet, which is ridiculous, and this horse has been racing all over the place.

Pick for the Race: (10) Speaking Scout

I think this horse can be super tactical and has shown up wherever he runs. I think the fact that the short amount of travel from Santa Anita to here works well. I also want a price in a field this big.
