Matriarch Stakes Betting Preview

By: Ace the “Horse Whisperer”

Sunday Grade 1 racing on the turf from Del Mar is what dreams are made of. This baby will be going off right when football is ending from coast to coast. The Matriarch Stakes will be taking place this Sunday from Del Mar Racecourse and is carded as Race 7 going to post at 6:30 pm (ET).

Ten of the best ladies of the lawn will be running for the $400,000 purse over one mile on the turf. There is a heavy favorite here, but I think there is a chance we can land on a price for sure.

(5) Hamwood Flier- 5/1 Morning Line Odds

I almost feel bad for this horse. They’ve won four races in a row, with the last three all having the same speed figure of 94. They win on the lead, and lead all the way around. The only problem is they’ve only been in restricted stakes and have never seen a field like this before.

Mike Smith (20%) and Phil D’Amato (37%) are winning at great percentages but this poor gal is outclassed here. Who knows though, if no one goes to the lead with them they could walk home with the Matriarch Stakes win.

(6) Regal Glory- 8/5 Morning Line Odds

They won this race last year, and are a multiple Grade 1 winner. Their best speed figures would wipe the floor with these other horses. They haven’t won since June though, and in their last race they charged and then faded hard in the Breeder’s Cup Turf Mile.

Flavien Prat is aboard and winning at 23% for Chad Brown who is winning at 27% when he ships in. I think they go off at even money, and for that reason, I think you have to go elsewhere.

(7) Wakanaka- 5/1 Morning Line Odds

I love this little girl. I’ve seen her twice live and both times I was disappointed. Once because she lost, the other time because she beat me to end my Breeder’s Cup Day. They won last out in a nice stakes race and have won a Grade 2 this year.

The only problem is they haven’t put together a nice back to back race since coming to the US. Joel Rosario is staying onboard and is winning at 17% on the turf this year.

(8) Pizza Bianca- 6/1 Morning Line Odds

Pizza Man Bobby Flay owns this one, and although they are a Grade 1 winner, they haven’t yet run back to their form as they did when they were a two-year-old. The last two races are so bad that it’s hard to figure they come back and run a winning race, even though they are one for one here at Del Mar.

(9) Dolce Zel- 6/1 Morning Line Odds

This horse has gotten better in every race in their career from a speed figure standpoint, and they get the most winningest connections in the sport to ride. Irad Ortiz Jr. is shipping in and winning at 24% on the turf. Chad Brown is winning at 26% on the year.

All this horse needs to do is get a little better here and I think they will be hard to beat. They’ve only won a Grade 2, but they are lightly raced and have been pointed towards this Matriarch Stakes for some time.

Pick for the Race: (9) Dolce Zel

I think the fact that Irad is staying for this one tells me everything I need to know. They’re going to stalk the early pace and gets first run on the field. I don’t think anyone will be closing like a freight train so as long as Irad doesn’t get cute with it, I think they can win the Matriarch Stakes at a price.
