Some History of the Pennsylvania Derby
In 1979, the Pennsylvania Derby was run for the first time on Memorial Day. It didn’t take long and in 1981 they received graded status. The race was run on Labor Day from 1990 to 2009 and was a Grade II event. Another date changed happened in 2010 when it was run on the last Saturday in September. The reasoning was to get a stronger field preparing for the Breeder’s Cup. In 2017, they achieved Grade 1 status for the first time.
