Steady Growth Stakes Betting Preview
By: Ace the “Horse Whisperer”
I don’t always bet on Woodbine, but when I do, I love it when you’ve got horses of all shapes, sizes, and running styles coming together for a nice stakes affair on the all-weather. The Steady Growth Stakes will be going 1 1/16 miles on the all-weather track with a prizepool of $100,000. This stakes is for three year olds and up. This one is carded for Race 9 on Sunday December, 11th at 5:07 p.m. (ET) and I’ll tell you something right now, prices will surprise here!
(1) Dun Drum- 5/1 Morning Line Odds
I cannot get a read on this horse at all. They seem to run well on both turf and synthetic, but at the same time, they aren’t very consistent on either. They’ve got 20 races on the all-weather and have only won four of those races. Emma-Jayne Wilson is winning at 14% here while trainer Ian Black is only winning at 8%.
I think they want a longer distance also, as their recent good showings happened at a mile and a quarter. I just don’t think they will pop up and win this stakes.
(2) Grandson- 10/1 Morning Line Odds
You can call me crazy but I do think this horse has a chance. They took second by a neck last out over this track at a lower level. They also are pretty good on the all weather with two wins and two places in five total races. Their best will have to come in their thirteenth ever race, but Jose Campos is riding well and is winning at 10% on the year. John LeBlanc Jr. is training at 9% this year.
(4) Artie’s Storm- 2/1 Morning Line Odds
This horse is taking a tremendous step down in class as they’ve taken second twice in Grade 2 races recently. Their best race wins easily here and they are quite good with the synthetic as they have been out of the money once in eleven races. David Moran is winning at 10% while trainer Paul “Mayor” Buttigieg is winning at only 7%. His cousin would kill for those numbers, ahem.
(7) Avoman- 8/1 Morning Line Odds
This one hasn’t raced for more than two months and hasn’t seen the winners circle since last October. They do have good connections as jockey Justin Stein is winning at 14% while John Charalambous is winning at 13%. Their average speed is close enough to the average winning speed. I think this is an interesting place to come back to.
(8) Candy Overload- 8/5 Morning Line Odds
I mean, crown this horse. They won a Grade 2 last out. Their average speed dominates this field. The only question is if they can handle the distance as they are 0/1 when going this long. Jockey Sahin Civaci is winning at 15% here while trainer Mark Casse is winning at 17%. I think the fact that they are a closer suits them going longer. Workouts are interesting as they are all over the place.
Pick for the Race: (8-2-7)
Take the favorite over the two mid prices as they are consistent enough to not make this a super chalky exacta or trifecta.
