Is there a finer thing in racing than a sprint on the grass where the surf meets the turf down at Ole Del Mar? The Stormy Liberal Stakes will be taking place this Saturday from Del Mar Racecourse and is carded as Race 5 going to post at 5:30 pm (ET). This stakes affair will be on the turf course, with the prize pool being $100,000. Only three-year-olds and up are allowed in this one, as they’ll be sprinting 5 furlongs. There will be nine horses running, but the number four horse has scratched so silks count to 10.
(2) Lane Way- 5/2 Morning Line Odds
This horse is probably not the deserved favorite, but do watch out. Myracehorse owns this five-year-old gelding, and that means 5,000 people will be betting this horse to win. They won their last race out here on the turf, stalking the early pace, and does have a win over the track here. They have taken second twice at the distance though, which is concerning as they seem to like a bit more grass to run on. Mike Smith hasn’t been riding a ton but is winning at a 20% clip early in the meet.
(6) Whatmakessammyrun- 4/1 Morning Line Odds
This four-year-old gelding won a Grade 2 last out at long odds at Santa Anita and is coming in off a near career best. They’ve never won at Del Mar, however in three tries, and they’ve never won at this distance. Joe Bravo is aboard and winning at 15% at the meet. They have the highest last speed figure coming in, are dropping down in class, and had a wicked fast last workout.
(9) Coulthard- 5/1 Morning Line Odds
They are coming in with good form, but they haven’t won since the summer meet here at Del Mar. That win was at this distance over this course though, and the recent stakes placings put this one right at the level with this field. They are dropping in class, and Phil D’Amato trainees have won at a 37% clip. Ramon Vasquez is also showing up well, winning on 16% of his mounts.
(10) Sumter- 4/1 Morning Line Odds
You can totally throw out their last race as they shipped to Kentucky Downs and absolutely hated that unique course. They have a win over this course and are getting the best jockey in the colony, Flavien Prat, back onboard. I think the running style sets this horse apart from the rest as they usually hang closer to the front end.
Pick for the Race: (10) Sumter
Here’s the thing about sprints at Del Mar, going to the lead never hurts. I think this horse can either take them all the way around the course, or sit just off the pace and get in a good position from their outside post; Flavien Prat will have this horse in a great position coming into the final stretch. Flavien is a monster on the turf, and I believe he is going to cement himself back as a top jock during the Bing Crosby meet here at Del Mar.
