This is a Grade 2 $750,000 race at Belmont Park called the Suburban Handicap and it will be run on Saturday. This is part of the Stars and Stripes series and will be a ten furlongs race of older males. The race has a clear favorite but there are some great value bets to be placed in this race.
Let’s take a look at the order that I have them picked:
Shaman Ghost (4-5) is one of the best horses in the dirt track circuit. That is in evidence by his wins as the Santa Anita Handicap, Woodward and Pimlico Special. Then he was in the Pegasus World Cup and finished runner-up to Arrogate. There is really only one horse that has the speed to match Shaman Ghost. It is likely this horse wins.
However, since it is a great value bet, my money is on Matt King Coal (5-1) and his tremendous speed. He is the son of Cool Coal Man and is trained by Linda Rice. In several of his previous races he was not able to maintain a lead. He just had a good performance at the Mountainview Stakes at Penn National as he set a track record and was the winner. This will be his toughest challenge to date.
Keen Ice (6-1) is next and has some history to his name as the 2015 winner over American Pharoah in the Travers. The son of Curlin has faded in his previous three seasons and was a big disappointment in Dubai. One thing on his side is Todd Pletcher is his trainer and he will have him ready to start a bit slow and pass horses in the stretch. He finishes in the money.
At 10-1, we find Sunny Ridge, son of Holy Bull to run a solid race. He is just one money finish from grossing a million dollars. He has run well at Belmont and a second place finish in Brooklyn behind War Story. Look for this horse to try to settle in behind Matt King Coal and hope to have enough left to make a strong finish.
Watershed (10-1) is just in the pack and has never done real well in graded stakes. At Keeneland he won a race but was out of the race early at the Pimlico Special. He is talented but is out of his class in this one.
Follow Me Crev (5-1) shut down after a winning streak over a year past and was down in the dumps. Lately he has made a comeback with three consecutive races in the money but never sniffed a chance to win.
