The $300,000 Grade 2 Penn Mile Stakes is open to three-year-olds and will be the fourth of 11 races at Penn National on Friday. The mile race will be run on turf, and a field of seven horses is expected to make their way to the starting gate.
Betting Preview: Outadore
Outadore won his most recent race, the black type Animal Kingdom Stakes at Turfway Park, on March 27th, after starting as the even odds favorite over six and a half furlongs on the all-weather track in his first start as a three-year-old. His only start in a graded stakes race came in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland, where he finished third on November 6th after winning the Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs on September 12th.
The Wesley Ward-trained colt has a career mark of 3-0-1 in five outings and has earned $469,997. Outadore will be starting from the outside post position and is a slight favorite at morning line odds of 8/5.
Betting Preview: Annex
After winning his first three career races at Gulfstream Park, Annex took a step up in class on Derby Day at Churchill Downs but finished eighth out of 14 entries in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes after entering the starting gate as the 3/1 favorite. He briefly moved to fifth place, entering the stretch under veteran jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. but got outkicked as the field approached the finish line.
Annex broke his maiden in his first career race and has a record of 3-0-0 in four starts and earnings of $149,280. He has odds of 9/5 on the morning line and will start from the third post position in the Penn Mile Stakes.
Betting Preview: Chess’s Dream
It took Chess’s Dream four tries, but he finally broke his maiden in his final race as a juvenile at Gulfstream Park on December 20th. He picked up his first graded stakes win in his next outing as an 8/1 underdog in the $100,000 Grade 3 Kitten’s Joy Stakes at Gulfstream on January 30th but hasn’t been to the winner’s circle again, finishing just ahead of Annex in the American Turf Stakes his last time out.
His record is 2-2-2 in eight career starts and has accumulated $133,680 in earnings. Chess’s Dream’s morning line odds are 5/1, and he’ll start from post position four.
Betting Preview: Original
Original broke his maiden in his second race on November 14th at Aqueduct but failed to finish in his next outing at the Jerome Stakes at the same track, tiring after getting pushed to the outside at the top of the stretch in the mile race. His last two starts resulted in third-place finishes in stakes races, including the Kitten’s Joy Stakes.
In five races, Original has compiled a record of 1-0-2 with earnings of $72,530. He’ll start from the second post position and has morning line odds of 8/1.
