The TVG Pacific Classic is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 as a Grade 1 race and has a $500,000 purse attached to it. The race is at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California.

Preview

This race is a “Win and You’re In” with the champion getting a berth in the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.  There are six horse vying for the crown and the numbers are sparse with plenty of chances this summer to get work in. Another reason could be that the top horse, Maximum Security, is really, really good. The event will be available to watch on FS1 on August 22nd from 4 PM to 6:30 ET.

Maximum Security was the winner of the last Kentucky Derby but was disqualified after the race for interference. The horse has won six straight races. Another top horse is Higher Power that has one win, one second place finish and three third place finishes. Sharp Samurai has mostly rand on grass and now moves to the turf. This is the third career stat for this horse since 2017. Sharp Samurai has won some Grade 2 races and was a runner-up at the Eddie Read Stakes.

Midcourt was beaten by a nose in the Grade 2  San Pasqual Stakes in February by Maximum Security.Dark Vader has some money finishes and last finished third in the G2 Triple Bend Stakes in June. Mirinaque is an Argentinian horse making his first U.S. start. The horse has four wins an four second place race back home. The races were all on turf and not dirt. There are many possibilities for the 2020 Pacific Classic.

The Current Odds

midcourt 7-2

Higher Power 3-1

Mirinaque 10-1

Dark Vader 12-1

Maximum Security 1-1

Sharp Samurai 8-1

Pacific Classic Predictions Pacific Classic

It is likely Maximum Security is the best horse in the race but if you are bent on making some the a good value bet is the way to go.

I like Sharp Samurai for his good pace and stamina

Also a bet is necessary for the unknown Mirinaque. I am not much into horse races in Argentina but this horse is a winner there.

I will box Maximum Security, Sharp Samurai, Higher Power and a “show” bet for Mirinaque.
