Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer signed a sports betting bill into law last month. The Michigan Gaming Control Board will oversee legal sports betting, and also receive and grant gambling licenses. The board will also be allowed to issue licenses to casinos owned by various tribes. Some in Michigan are asking if they can go to one of the biggest casinos in the state and place legal sports bets.
The casino, ‘FireKeepers Casino’ in Battle Creek, Michigan, says they still can not take sports bets yet. Officials at Firekeepers announced on Sunday that they will be taking the next required steps to get sports betting up and running.
One issue at hand, is that a casino must engage in a partnership with a sportsbook. The casino is in negotiations right now with a sportsbook. Jim Wise is the marketing director of the FireKeepers Casino. Wise said on Sunday this is a process, and it can take time, the Governor just signed the bill into law last month.
FireKeepers Casino Is Currently In Talks With Two Different Sportsbooks
Mr. Wise said that the negotiations have been underway for a few weeks, and a deal could come together by next week, he said. A gaming expert said that ‘sports betting won’t get underway the second a deal is reached between the casino and sportsbook. Wise said once the partnership is etched in stone, he will have a better idea of an official launch date. Wise also indicated that there will have to be cosmetic changes to the inside of the casino.
Those changes have to be made so certain areas of the casino can be designated areas where guests can place their sports bets. However Wise said, he will not have the specifics on construction and dates of operation until he has cemented a deal with a sportsbook. Michigan was the 20th state that gave the green light to sports betting.
Michigan’s Pottawatomie Tribe Is Very Excited For Sports Betting To Begin At FireKeepers Casino
Jamie Stuck is the chairman of the tribal council of the Pottawatomie Huron Band of the Pottawatomie tribe said it’s a great opportunity. Stuck says the Pottawatomie tribe is in a 100% agreement that sports betting will be a win for everyone on all sides of the discussion.
He released an official statement on behalf of the tribe that read, “We salute the actions of the Michigan legislature and Governor Whitmer to proactively provide Michigan with the sports wagering and online casino options.” Stuck said, “this is a clear reflection of the desires of the people of Michigan who voted to allow sports betting.
Stuck said that passing the law, and signing the bill, keeps Michigan on an equal par with other states that have already launched sports betting. Stuck said ‘by the time everything is said and done, the majority of the states will have legalized sports betting’.
