Super Bowl Bets at Record High: Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest betting day of the year for bookmakers. Anything from the traditional point spreads, team totals, and money line to the most exotic prop bets like the duration of the national anthem, the color of the winning team’s gatorade, and mentions of the coronavirus, are on the table to wage on.

According to the American Gambling Association, Sports bettors wagered nearly $270 million in Super Bowl bets across the states with legalized sports betting in 2020, with Nevada retaining its top spot in the US with more than half of that total. The second was New Jersey followed by Pennsylvania.

This year’s Super Bowl match up brings an intriguing matchup that is drawing more betting participants as viewers and bettors alike are treated to a battle between the old guard Tom Brady against the do it all young gun of Patrick Mahomes.

If the matchup isn’t enough to draw in bettors then the storylines of a demi-god about to do the impossible and not only beat father time but also the herculean hero fans of the NFL have been waiting for. All taking place, for the first time, in a participating Super Bowl team’s stadium.

If all that isn’t enough to throw some of that stimmie check money on then maybe sports betting is for you.

Super Bowl 55 Betting Statistics

Sports betting is once again taking the field this Super Bowl but much different than in years past. Since last year’s Super Bowl, an added 30 million Americans have gained the opportunity to legally bet in sportsbooks.

With seven new jurisdictions: Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Montana, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington DC.

But like many other industries, the sports industry has been hit hard. With many families out of work or struggling to make ends meet there are fewer discretionary funds that can be used for a luxury such as gambling.

The AGA has conducted surveys following the pandemic shutdowns. This survey has found that betting has followed trends of replacing traditional brick and mortar with online alternatives.

Here are some highlights from the survey:

  • 1.4 million Americans plan to bet in-person at a sportsbook, down 61% from 2020.
  • 1.8 million bettors plan to place a bet with a bookie, down 21%.
  • 4.5 million Americans plan to place a pool, squares, or similar bet, down 19%.
  • 11.9 million Americans plan to bet casually with friends, down 18%
  • 56 percent of bettors plan to bet on the Chiefs while 44 percent plan to bet on the Buccaneers.

Super Bowl Bets Through the Roof

Among Super Bowl bettors, a record 7.6 million will bet with online sportsbooks this year, up 63 percent year-over-year. 23.2 million Americans plan to bet. That would be a decline of 12% from last year’s levels. While the shutdowns have affected many, it has led to the utilization of available technologies that will help bring betting into the 21st century.
