The promise of tax revenue staying in Virginia, the bills were able to generate bipartisan support. Some Republican members were very hesitant in giving their support to the bills. They said that they were very concerned about poor families and the social implications of legalized sports betting.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam Has Supported The Sports Betting Bills From The Start
Democratic Governor Ralph Northam,60, has been in office since 2018, has been in favor of sports betting since the Supreme Court overturned sports betting ban in 2018. After the approval on Sunday, Governor Northam is expected to sign the bills into law this week.
Northam, a pediatric neurologist before he entered the political arena has publicly stated that there are no negative issues centered around sports betting. He believes that people are betting on sports games illegally now.
The state of Virginia desperately needs the revenue that will come from sports betting the governor has said on several occasions. Sponsors of the bill said after Northam signs them, they could be up and running by the fall. Casinos in five cities would need voter approval in November before they can launch sports betting. The five cities that need voter approval are Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth, Norfolk and Richmond.
Some Republican Delegates Were Also On Board To Have Sports Betting In Virginia
There was some heavy lobbying by Virginia Republican party members. Republican Delegate Barry Knight of Virginia Beach said, “It’s going to create jobs, and lift some people up.” Virginia legislators were working against a deadline and decided to work through the weekend to get their budget issues taken care of. There was quite a lot of regulatory issues that had to be addressed with the sports betting bills said a source that was there.
Some members were a little bit irked at the issue of not being allowed to bet on Virginia college sports events. They believe that’s a lot of lost revenue. They said, ‘that if sports betting is going to be legal, it should include all sports. The opponents to betting on Virginia college sports betting, ‘is inappropriate and should not be allowed. It puts student-athletes in positions they should not be in.’
