Detroit Grand Prix: How to Watch

The qualification sessions will be televised on NBC Sports Network. Both races will be broadcast on NBC. For extra coverage throughout the weekend, tune into Peacock and IndyCar Radio on Sirius XM.

Detroit Grand Prix: The Course

The Detroit Grand Prix takes place on Belle Island on a temporary street circuit. It’s a very narrow course which makes it difficult to pass. Qualifications are critical at Belle Island because starting at the top of the field provides drivers with a significant advantage.

The distance around the track is 2.35 miles. Drivers will undertake 70 laps totaling 164.5 miles on Saturday and Sunday. There are 13 turns that separate hard braking areas and fast straights, which will challenge every racer throughout the weekend.

Detroit Grand Prix: Defending Champions

The Detroit Grand Prix did not occur last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was unfortunate because it is one of the largest race weekends of the year. Both defending champions from 2019 are back in the field in 2021.

In 2019, Josef Newgarden won on Saturday, and Scott Dixon earned the victory on Sunday. Each driver is looking to bounce back after a disappointing Indy 500. Dixon started the Greatest Spectacle in Racing in the pole position, but he finished in 17th place after a pit stop miscue.

Josef Newgarden celebrating his 2019 race victory

Newgarden finished 12th in the Indy 500 after being listed as one of the favorites. There are two goals that every driver has throughout the year. The first is to win the Indy 500, and the second is to be the NTT IndyCar Series champion.

Newgarden and Dixon are still in great shape to win the series this season, but they must bounce back this weekend. Newgarden is sixth, and Dixon is second in the points standings.

Detroit Grand Prix: Alex Palou, the Points Leader

Alex Palou had a phenomenal race on May 30th in the Indy 500. Palou battled out the final laps with Helio Castroneves, but he came up just short in the race finishing in second. Castroneves joined Al Unser, Rick Mears, and A.J. Foyt as the only four-time race winners.

Palou’s strong showing and Dixon’s downfall in Indianapolis have given the Spaniard a 36-point lead over Dixon. According to PointsBet Sportsbook, Palou is +2500 to win the race.

The young driver will start with a six-spot grid penalty after an unapproved engine modification in the Indy 500. This will be his first time racing in the Detroit Grand Prix.

Detroit Grand Prix: The Favorites

The race one favorite is Scott Dixon at +500. He is followed by Will Power (+625), Josef Newgarden (+625), Pato O’Ward (+700), and Colton Herta (+900). The remainder of the top ten favorites is rounded out by Rinus VeeKay (+1200), Alexander Rossi (+1400), Simon Pagenaud (+1800), Sebastian Bourdais (+2200), and Graham Rahal (+2200).
