CARDINALS NEWS
- Cardinal starting pitchers currently lead the National League with a 3.14 ERA.
- John Brebbia was sent to Memphis and Tyler O’Neill was called up.
- Cardinals come home to face the Reds with Michael Wacha on the hill.
The Cardinals were defeated by the Cubs 8-5 as Luke Weaver took the loss which ended the five-game win streak by the Cardinals. Jedd Gyorko was 2-for-2 and Harrison Bader had one hit.
Paul DeJong struck out with men on base and Marcel Ozuna fanned three times in the loss and due to that several men were left on base.
On Friday, April 20, the Cardinals will return home for a six-game homestand. The weekend series will take place April 20-22 with the Cincinnati Reds. Monday will be an off-day before the New York Mets make their only visit to Busch Stadium on May 24-26.
Minor League Results
Memphis Redbirds were winners in game 1 on Thursday evening over the Omaha Storm Chasers by a 6-2 score. Jack Flaherty had a stellar performance as he went the distance in a 7-inning contest. He allowed two hits and two earned runs while walking one batter and striking out six.
The offense was led by the second baseman Wilfredo Tovar. He drove in five runs and was 2-for-3 including a home run. Designated hitter Max Schrock, had two hits in four plate appearances and shortstop Yairo Munoz also added two hits in the win.
Game 2 saw the Redbirds scoring their only two runs in the 4th inning coming from a 2-run homer off the bat of Adolis Garcia. several players had one hit for the Chiefs with Randy Arozarena, Luke Voit, Alex Mejia, Yairo Munoz, and Steve Baron being those batters.
The game was pitched by the bullpen. Sean Gilmartin started and went two innings and gave up the only run. Edward Mujica got two innings and allowed three hits, Derian Gonzalez went 1.1 innings and was not scored on and John Brebbia picked up the save as he fanned four of the five batters he faced.
Springfield Cardinals scored five runs in the 6th inning to catapult them into a lead that headed them to a 6-4 win over Arkansas. John Nogowski had the big blow of the game with a grand slam for his 3rd homer of the season. Catcher Andrew Knizner had two hits as did Victor Roache.Tommy Edman and Thomas Spitz were 2-for-5 in the win.
Conner Greene got the start and went six innings while allowing four hits and one earned run. He also walked four and fanned three. Hector Mendoza had a perfect one inning on the mound as did Brady Bowen. Landon Beck ran into 9th inning issues as he could only get one out before surrendering three hits and three runs to allow Arkansas back into the game. Jacob Evans was called upon to stop the bleeding. He was able to get the final two outs to preserve the win and garner his first save of the season.
Palm Beach Cardinals were on the wrong end as they lost 4-2 on Thursday to Bradenton. Catcher Ryan McCarvel hit his first home run of the season and outfielder Shane Billings added a 3-for-4 night. The offense only mustered eight hits in the entire game.
Mike O’Reilly (1-1) suffered the loss as he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four hits and three earned runs. Alo, he walked one and fanned seven Bradenton batters. Jacob Patterson gave up three hits in 1.2 innings of work and Ronnie Williams allowed one hit and one run and walked three in the game.
Peoria Chiefs managed only one hit and that was off the bat of shortstop Edwin Figuera. the only run in the 2-1 loss to Quad Cities was from one of the three errors from the River Bandits. As a team, the Chiefs struck out 18 times with Dylan Carlson getting the Golden Sombrero and four punch outs.
Jake Walsh was the starter and went six innings where he allowed three hits and one earned run. He fanned nine batters. Levi MaVorhis and Fabian Blanco were the next tow to the hill and Thomas St. Clair picked up the loss by allowing a run in extra innings.
