College Baseball Countdown

College Baseball moved to #20 in our way-too-early poll before the season begins with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles  college baseball begins with a home stand on February 17-19 as they face Liberty. The second weekend finds a big Ten opponent in Illinois from February 24-26. Southern Mississippi will be playing as part of the Sun Belt conference.

The complete schedule has thirty-one home games and 14 of those are against teams which made the NCAA Tournament in 2021.

Head Coach Scott Berry has some key returners for his squad in shortstop Dustin Dickerson and starting pitcher Tanner Hall along with outfielders Slade Wilks, Carson Paetow and Recce Ewing. Christopher Sargent and Danny Lynch will man the infield corners.

Projected key returners: SS Dustin Dickerson, OF Reece Ewing, SP Tanner Hall, 3B Danny Lynch, OF Carson Paetow, 1B Christopher Sargent, OF Slade Wilks. LHP Tyler Martin from Nebraska will get a nod on the rotation early in 2023.

Last year Southern Miss was part of the Conference USA and finished in first place. pitcher Tanner Hall returns to lead the way in a new conference and may be one of the best pitchers in the nation this year.

 

More on Coach Berry:

From 1983-1984, he played college baseball at Crowder College. He was a catcher and was forced to give it up due to back issues.From 1997- 2000 he was head coach for the Meridian Tigers. He transferred to Southwest Missouri State  to receive his degree. While at SEMO, he was an assistant coach.

He was named an assistant at Meridian Community College in 1991 under Corky Palmer who would precede him at Southern Mississippi. After six seasons, he became the head coach at Meridian. He was head coach there for four seasons and received many coach of the year awards.. His teams were ranked in the top 10 all four years he was at the helm, and placed 25 players at Division I schools and coached nine future professional players.

Then he joined Palmer at Southern Miss where he held many role such as hitting coach, pitching coach and associate head coach. In 2010, he was named head coach after the retirement of Palmer.
