The San Francisco Giants will travel and take on their crosstown rivals the Oakland Athletics for a three-game series.
The Giants have put together their best month of baseball. They’ve won ten of their last twelve games, and they now sit three games atop the NL West. The return of Evan Longoria and the addition of Kris Bryant have brought life and power to a talented lineup. Despite all of the injuries at the plate, San Francisco looks poised to make another deep postseason run.
The Athletics were able to avoid a sweep yesterday with a win over Chicago. Prior to their four-game skid, the A’s were winners of nine of their last ten games. They have been inconsistent at the plate, but Oakland has played themselves right into the thick of the AL playoff picture.
On the Mound
Alex Wood (10-3, 4.14 ERA) will get the ball for the Giants here. He earned his tenth win of the season against the Rockies last week after only giving up two runs in six innings of work, and tossing six strikeouts. The eighth-year pitcher is enjoying a great first season in the Bay, and he dominated Oakland in his start during their previous set, tossing eight strikeouts over five innings.
James Kaprielian (6-4, 3.33 ERA) will take the mound for Oakland this Friday. The rookie standout has enjoyed a solid first year, and through 15 starts he leads all rookies in ERA. The UCLA product has fared well in his past three home starts, including a seven-inning, ten-strikeout performance against the potent Boston Red Sox.
Giants vs Athletics Prediction
The Battle of the Bay looks set to deliver another set of high-quality baseball. The Giants have really got things going at the plate, and their powerful, veteran lineup feels appealing facing a rookie in Kapriellan. If Alex Wood can replicate his performance against the A’s from June, San Fran feels like the pick here. Bet on the Giants to take the first game over the Athletics.
