Jordan Montgomery had an up-and-down season for the St. Louis Cardinals after being traded from the New York Yankees. The LHP looks to have a big year in 2023.
High Hopes For Jordan Montgomery
Scoring runs is fun and all, but limiting runs is more important. The St. Louis Cardinals have one of the most potent offenses in all of baseball. The issue, however, is the pitching. After Jose Quintana walked in free agency, who is going to step up?
A lot of Cardinals fans hear the name “Jordan” and get filled with joy. They typically think of Jordan Walker and what his future looks like, but the most important Jordan right now is Jordan Montgomery. It was an incredibly up-and-down season for him, and we need him to have a huge 2023 season if we want to make a run deep into October.
The Good and the Bad
St. Louis acquired Jordan Montgomery from the New York Yankees at the trade deadline, and a lot of fans had mixed thoughts. It was awesome getting another starter, especially with our banged-up rotation, but it was very sad seeing Harrison Bader go.
I was one of the fans thrilled by the trade, and he helped me out big time with his first few games with the Redbirds. Do you remember how dominant he was? Man, I thought we just made the best trade ever. Reality set, and Montgomery became the pitcher many people expected him to be.
Before heading to Busch Stadium, the lefty was 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA. The Yankees would not use him in the postseason and sought to trade him to a team that needed him. Things turned around when he started wearing the bird on his chest.
Montgomery was 6-3 with a 3.11 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 8.6 K/9, and 61 strikeouts through 63.2 IP. In his first four starts with the team, he had a 0.35 ERA with a complete game one-hitter. Montgomery’s first game on the hill for the Cardinals was a win against the team that traded him. All was well, but he went from hero to zero really quickly.
After that thrilling run he had, Montgomery allowed five or more runs three different times. The month of September was brutal for him as cleanup hitters had a .844 OPS against him. A lot of good and a lot of bad came with the arm of Montgomery.
Is Jordan Montgomery the Ace?
It feels weird to say, but Jordan Montgomery might be the ace for the St. Louis Cardinals. Adam Wainwright is a quality pitcher, Jack Flaherty is a huge question mark, Miles Mikolas is inconsistent, and Jose Quintana is no longer with the team. I think Jordan Montgomery might be the ace of this team.
That remark should scare you; it certainly scares me too. The Cardinals really need another arm if they want to make a run. The Milwaukee Brewers are going to have a way better year, and the Chicago Cubs looked good to end the year and are spending money. I do not know when we will get another pitcher, but it needs to happen, and it needs to happen quickly.
