The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals are set to meet in what should be a fun divisional contest Wednesday. Currently, Washington is favored at -1.5 according to most sportsbooks.
Overall, Washington has the edge in all major categories. They have scored 4.99 runs per game and have accumulated 8.53 hits per game. On the pitching side of things, they have recorded 3.25 walks, but have also offset that number with 8.54 strikeouts.
Washington has a 21-19 record at home and a 29-25 mark as the favorite. Miami has a 29-48 record as the underdog, while Washington is 44-39 ATS.
Alcantra looks to bounce back
Sandy Alcantra has struggled to this point in the season. He comes into the game with a 4-7 record and a 3.86 ERA.
His last start on June 27 — also against Washington — was less than stellar. In six innings of work, he gave up seven hits and six earned runs while only striking out one batter. To say he needs to bounce back in this upcoming start would be an understatement.
Washington has seen him well. In 70 at-bats, they have 24 hits. That equals a .343 batting average. In particular, Anthony Rendon has seen him well. In 10 at-bats, he has four hits, including a double. With three runs batted in, and a walk, he has given Alcantra trouble.
Adam Eaton is also a batter that has seen him well. In nine at-bats, he has four hits, including a run batted in and three walks. That is good enough for a .444 batting average.
Simply put, Alcantra needs to avoid trouble as often as he can. As long as he keeps the ball down and keeps his pitch count low, that is a recipe for a successful evening. Failure to do so may result in a loss.
Strasburg aims to shut down Miami
Stephen Strasburg had a decent outing against Miami in his last start on June 27. In seven innings of work, he gave up seven hits and four earned runs while striking out four batters. Throwing 111 pitches, that was good enough to get him the win. This year has been very successful for Strasburg, as he has a 9-4 record with a 3.27 ERA.
To put it nicely, this entire Miami lineup has struggled against him. They come into this game with a .198 batting average. Perhaps the batter that has had the most consistent success against him is Miguel Rojas.
In 23 at-bats, he has 10 hits, including four doubles. With three runs batted in and two walks, he has been a thorn in Strasburg’s side. Garrett Cooper has also had minor success, tallying a hit in three at-bats. That is good enough for a .333 batting average.
I would take Washington in this one. Strasburg is still one of the most consistent arms in the game, and it seems like the Nationals have Alacantra’s number. Make sure to take Washington -1.5 in this one. All signs point to them securing a victory on Wednesday.
