Minor League games begin for some of the Cardinals affiliates in 77 days. Each affiliate, Memphis Redbirds, Springfield Cardinals. High-A Peoria Chiefs and Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals were announced on January 19th.
Minor League Memphis Redbirds
Ben Johnson, a Memphis native is back for his fifth season as manager of the Memphis Redbirds. As a player, Johnson was drafted by the San Diego Padres and played for 10 seasons in the major and minor league system of the Padres and Mets. Last season under the helm the Memphis squad finished with a 73-77 record and fifth place in the West in the international League.
The new pitching coach is Darwin Marrero who was promoted from Springfield. Howie Clark join the Cardinals is the new hitting coach after he was a coaching the Orioles and White Sox organizations.. Will Peterson also joins the staff as an assistant coach.
The 2023 trainer will be Dan Martin for another year and Henry Torres is the strength and conditioning coach.
Corey Fitzgerald as an affiliate fellow.This position will manage all aspects of video and technology at these locations in supporting the minor league coaching staff.
Minor League Springfield Cardinals
Manager Jose Leger returns and joining him in the dugout and new to the Cardinals coaching staff is Pitching Coach Eric Peterson, Hitting Coach Brock Hammit and Coach Will Hawks. Alex Wolfinger returns for his second season as Springfield’s Athletic Trainer, and is joined by new Strength & Conditioning Coach Spencer Clevenger and new Minor League Fellow Noah Landow on the coaching staff.
Peterson is in his first season in Springfield after time as a scout for the Cardinals. He is 29 years of age. He played two seasons at Temple University and then transferred to North Carolina State.
Minor League High-A Peoria Chiefs
Peoria will have Patrick Anderson back for a second season to guide the Chiefs. He saw 14 different Chiefs players earned a promotion to Double-A Springfield. Prior to joining the Cardinals organization, Anderson spent seven years in the Washington Nationals organization from 2013-2019. He also worked in the Kansas City Royals system from 2001-2008.
Pitching Coach Edwin Moreno will also return for a second season in 2023. Moreno played 11 professional seasons and made his Major League debut with the San Diego Padres in 2009. Moreno oversaw a pitching staff that featured Michael McGreevy and Gordon Graceffo, two of the organization’s top prospects in 2022. Graceffo departed Peoria with a 0.99 ERA and was named the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in December. Additionally, the Chiefs pitching staff finished 2022 as one of the Midwest League’s best. Over the season’s final 37 games, no pitching staff struck out more hitters than the Chiefs did (384).
Casey Chenoweth joined the Cardinals organization in December and will serve as the Chiefs hitting coach. Chenoweth previously spent three seasons as a coach in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, as well as two years in the San Francisco Giants system. Chenoweth played collegiately at East Central (OK).
Christina Whitlock will serve as Peoria’s fourth coach. Whitlock spent the 2022 season serving as a tech fellow and was based at the Cardinals complex in Jupiter. Whitlock brings more than two decades of coaching experience to the table. As a softball player at the University of South Carolina, Whitlock was a two-time All-American and helped lead the Gamecocks to the Women’s College World Series in 1997. She also spent time as a member of the U.S. national team.
Paden Eveland will return to serve as the team’s athletic trainer. Eveland will be joined by fellow returnee Ryan Duffy, who returns to his role as strength and conditioning coach. Both men are entering their second season with the Chiefs.
Colin Campbell is in the new affiliate fellow position.

Minor League Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals
Gary Kendall is the manager in Palm Beach for his second season. Before he joined the Cardinals in 2022. he was a manager for 17 seasons in the Orioles organization at Norfolk Tides, Bowie Baysox, Aberdeen IronBirds, Delmarva Shorebirds, and Bluefield Orioles. Through his leadership. he led the PB Cardinals to a second half championship an a playoff appearance
Giovani Carrara is returning for hi s second season as the pitching coach in Palm Beach. He previously held the role with the Florida Complex League Cardinals.
Liberty
university alum.Willi Martin is thenew hitting coach. he held this spot with the Chiefs in 2021. He has worked closely with the United Shore Professional League.
Former Cardinals player Bernard Gilkey is becoming a coach in
palm Beach.The former left fielder was in St Louis for six seasons before joining the New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves.
Manaul Santamaria will serve as the team’s Affiliate Fellow, where he will manage all aspects of video and technology for the club.
Also on staff is Jeff Case acting as the athletic trainer and Campbell Quirk as strength and conditioning coach. Both served in the same role on Kendall’s staff last season.
