Who is the most dominant MLB team right now? With about 40 games in the books for the MLB season, the AL East and the NL West look to be the strongest divisions in the MLB. It will be interesting to see what these teams will do heading into the summer months. As of right now, it is hard to differentiate which teams will be buyers and which teams will be sellers.
Teams who were thought to be dominant in the preseason have not lived up to their expectations to say the very least. The Minnesota Twins, the New York Yankees, and the Atlanta Braves have not lived up to expectations through the early part of the season.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers will do whatever they can to defend the World Series title. However, the organization is dealing with a few injuries, and Corey Seager will not be in the lineup for a while. The Dodgers have signed former Los Angeles Angel, Albert Pujols, who was recently let go.
The Dodgers could use some firepower off the bench and could play Pujols at first when playing against left-handed pitchers. The Dodgers lost 14 out of 18 at one point of the season and will be missing some of the everyday starters in the lineup. When the team is fully healthy, the Dodgers are arguably the most dominant MLB team in the league.
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox has been a surprise as the team sits on top of arguably the first or second toughest division in the league. After trading their face of the franchise player to the Los Angeles Dodgers, many experts and fans believed that the Red Sox will be looking to shed more contracts and rebuild for the future.
The Red Sox have the fifth-best run differential in baseball. Shortstop Xander Boegarts and designated hitter J.D. Martinez holds the fourth and fifth-best batting averages in baseball. However, the pitching rotation is not the rotation even with Chris Sale will not put this team at the top of the division. The Toronto Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the New York Yankees are just behind them.
The Houston Astros hold the first Wild Card as the team is just half a game behind the Oakland Athletics in the AL West for first place. The Astros have the best-run differential in baseball as they are 8-2 in their last ten games.
The Astros have the best batting average in baseball and are second in slugging percentage. Jose Altuve is on an eleven-game hitting streak, during which he’s hitting .400 with two doubles, three home runs. However, the team had a stretch where they went 1-9.
Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox were the preseason favorites to win the AL Central as their only major threat was the Minnesota Twins. The Minnesota Twins have the worst record in the AL and can’t seem to get out of the slump even with Byron Buxton having an MVP type season. The White Sox were also considered as the favorites to make it to the World Series as they were seen as the only team that could take down the New York Yankees.
The White Sox have too many weapons as Yermin Mercedes still holds the lead for best batting average in the league and Tim Anderson has a .328 batting average which is good for ninth. In the last eleven games, Jose Abreu is hitting .395 with three doubles, a triple, three homers, and 14 RBI.
The White Sox are on top with two-thirds of their outfielders on the IL with most notably Eloy Jimenez out for at least six months. The White Sox also have a great pitching rotation as they have the third-best runs average. I believe the most dominant MLB team this season has to be the Chicago White Sox.
