Padres at Braves Pick and Preview – The Padres (55-42) and Braves (46-47) will square off today in a doubleheader that starts at 12:20 pm ET.
After Monday night’s game got rained out the Braves got the 2-1 win last night behind a Freddie Freeman homerun.
Freeman went opposite field on an outside fastball at 95 mph from Yu Darvish that would seal the game for Atlanta putting them up 2-1.
That was Freeman’s 22nd homerun of the season.
Yu Darvish went five and two thirds two earned runs with five strikeouts in a loss. This was his first start on the mound since July 8th after coming off the IL list after left hip inflammation.
Touki Toussaint earned his first win of the season after going six and two thirds giving up three hits and one earned run.
“I think everybody knows that’s been my biggest problem, not throwing strikes,” Toussaint said. “Mike Maroth in Triple-A was like, ‘Man, you just need to throw the ball in the zone and let guys get themselves out.’ That’s basically what I did. See how many strikes I could throw and go from there.”
The Braves also got some help from the bullpen that had been struggling. The Braves had lost 10 times when leading after six innings, tied with Arizona for most in the majors. Will Smith earned his 19th save in 21 chances after facing four batters in the ninth.
Starting on the mound for the Braves will be Kyle Muller in game one and Bryse Wilson in game two. Neither pitcher has faced the Padres this season.
Kyle Muller is 1-2 on the year with a 3.45 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 15.2 innings pitched.
In his last start Muller went five and two thirds innings with four hits and three earned runs resulting in a 3-2 loss on July third.
Muller’s last win came on June 27th against the Reds where gave up just one hit in five innings.
The Padres will bring out Chris Paddack for the first game. Paddock is 5-6 this year with a 5.49 ERA and 83 strikeouts which is tied for 7th in the MLB.
Paddack’s last win came in a 24-8 rout of the Nationals just a few days ago that saw him give up five hits and four earned runs.
In game one of this doubleheader I think the Braves earned their second straight win. Mueller seems to be the more solid choice on the mound with Paddack having some strenuous last few outings.
In game two the Padres will use Reiss Knehr who is 0-0 on the year with his only appearance coming against the Colorado Rockies on July 9 going three and two third innings with two hits and two earned runs.
Reiss had just been promoted from Triple-A El Paso.
As for the Braves, Bryse Wilson will make his 13th start on the year with a 2-2 record overall and a 5.34 ERA.
Wilson went six and two thirds innings with five hits and one earned run in last start that resulted in a 6-1 win over the Pirates.
This will be Wilson’s first matchup against the San Diego Padres this season.
I like the Braves to go for the sweep in the second game with Knehr being a question mark coming out of Triple-A.
He does have lots of potential on the mound and could have a day for San Diego but right now the Padres are struggling just a bit losing four of their last six.
Wilson seems like the more reliable pick on the mound and the Braves bullpen seemed to be figuring things out in the first game.
