The Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks are set to face each other in a Sunday afternoon contest. Currently, most sportsbooks have the Rockies as the favorite at -1.5.
In the last 10 games head-to-head, Colorado has had the edge. With 5.60 runs scored, 3.70 walks, and 8.30 strikeouts, they have bested the Diamondbacks in those categories. To their credit, Arizona has more hits between the two teams at 10.40.
Colorado comes into this game with a record of 44-43, while Arizona is 44-45. Arizona has an 18-22 home record, which is decent. Colorado is 28-15 as the favorite, while Arizona is 23-24 as the underdog. To their credit, Arizona has a 51-38 record ATS, while Colorado is 45-42.
Marquez looks to have a solid outing
On the season, German Marquez is 8-3 with a 4.38 ERA. In his last outing, he had a difficult start. In six innings of work, he gave up eight hits and four earned runs while striking out seven batters. Throwing 90 pitches and facing 27 batters, he did not receive a decision.
This Arizona Diamondbacks team has seen Marquez well. They have a .291 batting average against him, recording 41 hits in 141 at-bats.
The hitter who has seen him best is Eduardo Escobar. In eight at-bats, he has recorded five hits, including a home run and three runs batted in. For his efforts, he has a .625 batting average.
Young tries to build off solid outings
Alex Young has not faced the Colorado Rockies, which could be a challenge for both sides. In his last appearance, in relief against the Dodgers on July 2, he pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up no hits and striking out one batter on 26 pitches.
Because he has not faced the Giants, he will be going into this game with a fresh slate. This means he will be able to use many of his pitches and focus on painting the corners for strikes. This is a crucial start for him, as it should give him confidence moving forward.
Looking at a more complete start, he faced the Giants on June 27. In that game, he pitched five innings, giving up three hits and an earned run, striking out five batters while facing 20. It remains to be seen which type of pitcher will show up, but one thing is for certain, he has very good stuff.
Rockies vs Diamondbacks Pick
Marquez has been on a roll lately, and he has shown he can deliver a quality start time in and time out. He’s getting hot at exactly the right time for Colorado, which figures to be in the thick of a playoff race. It remains to be seen what Marquez will do on Sunday, but his track record should speak for itself at this point.
Young, while he has solid stuff, should be in for a challenge against the Rockies lineup in this one. I would feel comfortable taking Colorado in this matchup.
