The Milwaukee Brewers are in the lead for the NL East, with a record of 72-47. They have won two straight games and have pulled away from the Cincinnati Reds being 8 games behind. Milwaukee also swept the dreadful Cubs to go 7-3 in their past 10 games. Milwaukee will want to stay steady and beat up on the Cardinals this week.
The St. Louis Cardinals have looked their best this past week than they have the entire year, but it may be a bit too late. Winning 6 in a row will definitely fill that locker room with good vibes. They will have their best three pitchers going these next three games and may be able to extend their streak to 9 games. It will be an entertaining series to watch.
The Cardinals Are Clicking on All Cylinders
The Cardinals are indeed clicking on all cylinders, as every announcer says every game. But the offense has finally come to life in the middle of August, scoring 4 or more runs in 11 games straight, resulting in 8 wins. The pitching has also been outstanding, allowing just 13 runs during this 6 game winning streak. They are just 4.5 games back from the Padres for the last wild card.
The last three series have been against two sub-par teams in the Kansas City Royals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. But hey, wins are wins. Nolan Arenado has been out of this world with 4 home runs in 3 games. Paul Goldschmidt has been knocking in runners for the past week. Tyler O’Neil has come back to life with two home runs in the past series.
Jack Flaherty is also back in the rotation and was superb in his past start with 6 innings pitched and no earned runs. The Cardinals also have vintage Adam Wainwright on the mound for the last few weeks and have had great success. The Cardinals have looked dangerous and are gaining momentum as they vie for the final wild-card spot.
The Milwaukee Brewers Are Winning Machines
The Brewers can’t seem to lose and are winning very, very consistently. They have a great starting rotation which has carried this team to many victories. Their offense has been knocking in runs to help the phenomenal staff. And then their team average of .233 is tied for 25th in the MLB, which is surprising looking at their win total.
They are coming off of two great series against the awful Pirates and tanking Cubs, which is why the Cardinals and Reds haven’t been able to gain on them. Former MVP Christian Yelich has had a down year with just 6 home runs and a .236 average. The Brew Crew’s best hitter has been Avisail Garcia, who is hitting just .267, but launched 21 dingers on the year.
Milwaukee’s staff includes Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, and Freddy Peralta, who all have ERA’s between 2.18 and 2.26, which is outstanding. Brent Suter leads the team in wins with 12. And then the bullpen is dominant with Devin Williams and Josh Hader reliving every night. The Brewers are a great team and will be put on a show against the Cards.
Pitcher Probables and Prediction
Tuesday, August 17th: Adam Wainwright vs Corbin Burnes
These two stud pitchers will take the mound in the first game of the series. Corbin Burnes owns a 7-4 record, and Adam Wainwright is 11-6 on the year. Burnes has the better ERA with a 2.23, but Wainwright has a steady ERA of 3.27. I’ll give this game to the Brewers with a score of 5-3.
Wednesday, August 18th: Jack Flaherty vs Freddy Peralta
This we’ll be a great matchup with two terrific right-handed pitchers. Flaherty has missed tons of games and still has the same amount of wins as Peralta, who has been great all year. Flaherty holds a 2.65 ERA and will be ready to grab another win after his first start in months last week. Freddy Peralta has a 9-3 record and has a 2.26 ERA. The Cardinals will win this one 7-2.
Thursday, August 19th: TBD vs Brandon Woodruff
The Cardinals have not announced who will pitch, but it will most certainly be a lefty as the remaining pitchers are Wade LeBlanc, J.A. Happ, and Jon Lester. They will have to go against Bradon Woodruff, who has been phenomenal all year with a 2.18 ERA and 7 wins. The Cardinals are going to squeeze out the win in the end with a score of 6-5.
