Walk Off Winner for May 1

Throughout history, the St. Louis Cardinals have won their share of walk-offs and they have lost them, too. During the month of May, I will be bring some of those winners to you that have happened in the previous 50 years (1971-2021).

Walk-Off Winner for May 1, 1987

On May 1st, the Cardinals have four walk-off wins in the last 50 years and they were in 1979,1987, 2015 and 2018. Let’s take a gander at the one in 1987:

It was the Cardinals and Dodgers facing each other. Starters were Rick Honeycutt and Joe Magrane. It was night game at Busch Stadium II in front of 43,363 fans  Neither would get to finish the game that lasted 3 hours and 25 minutes.

The Dodgers got the scoring started in the third inning as Mariano Duncan got a bunt single to third, Steve Sax singled him to third base and Pedro Guerrero smack and runs coring single and  Los Angeles led 1-0.

In the 6th, the Dodgers scored two more run as first baseman Mickey Hatcher singled and catcher Mike Sciosa followed with a double . He came into score on an error by Vince Coleman. Dodgers lead is 3-0.

The Cardinals come roaring back in the bottom half of the 6th inning. Coleman fans to lead off the inning. Ozzi Smith coaxes a walk,Terry Pendleton singles, Jack Clark singles  and Honeycutt’s  done is finished and fireballing right hander Tom Niedenfuer is in to stop the offensive barrage. Willie McGee steps to the plate and hammers a home run  of the grand slam variety and the Cardinals lead 4-3.

In the 9th, the Dodgers bounce back in the 9th inning as Todd Worrell replaces Magrane on the hill. With two out, Steve Sax doubles and Pedro Guerrero  ties it with a single. The game is knotted up at 4-4 going to the bottom of the 9th inning. Nothing happens and they go to extra innings, Now to the 10th inning and Ricky Horton is on the mound for the Cardinals. He tosses a 1-2 -3  10th inning and in the bottom of the frame. Matt Young enter to pitch for Los Angeles. Pendleton fans. Jack Clark doubles to left. Willie McGee walks and  Tito Landrum pinch hits and he strikes out. Two outs and Steve Lake singles to left for the WALK OFF WINNER (WOW).
