The Cardinals broke out in the 11th inning much like we were expecting them to do the entire game against the Phillies. It is Philadelphia that helps make the Cardinals and their fans better. But I guess the rest of the National League feels that way, too.
MINOR LEAGUES
Memphis Redbirds (AAA) defeated Round Rock 8-3 with a mini offensive explosion of their own. Nick Martini led the scoring as he went 4-for-5 and hit home run #3. Breyvic Valera went 3-for-4 with one run batting in and Randall Grichuk smacked a home run and drove in two runs going 2-for-4. Luke Voit and Harrison Bader each had two hits in five plate appearances.
Mike Mayers improved his record to 5-6 on the season as he went seven innings and allowed two hits while fanning seven batters. Kevin Herget had a bit of trouble getting four outs by allowing four hits and three earned runs but he struck out three. Ryan Sherriff pitched to one batter to end the game. The Redbirds don’t play on Wednesday.
Springfield Cardinals (AA) was beaten by Tulsa 4-2 on Tuesday night. Sandy Alcantara took the loss (3-5) with six innings on the mound and giving up eight hits. He allowed four earned runs with four walks and six strikeouts. Ian McKinney, Tyler Bray and Landon Beck each tossed one scoreless inning.
Bruce Caldwell connected on his 8th homer of the season and Adolis Garcia had two hits as did Dickie Joe Thon and Andrew Knizner. Zac Gallen ( 1-1, 2.04) goes to the hill for an 11:10 morning start today.
Palm Beach Cardinals (High-A) was victorious over the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs 4-3. Randy Arozarena and Tommy Edman each had two hits and newcomer Andy Young had 2 RBI’s.
Connor Jones went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and fanning four for the victory. Andrew Morales, Chandler Hawkins and Jacob Evans each allowed no runs. Junior Fernandez (3-2, 3.88) gets the Wednesday start.
Peoria Chiefs (Low-A) did not play due to their All-Star break.
State College Spikes (Rookie A Ball) won their first game of the season with a 5-3 score over Williamsport. Joshua Lopez went 2-for-4 and Edwin Figuera had two runs batted in while Matt Davis had a double and a run knocked in.
Daniel Castano notched the win (1-0) with six solid innings. He allowed 3 earned runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Colton Thomas pitched one scoreless inning and Robbie Gordon had two scoreless and hitless innings. The next Spikes game is Wednesday as Jonathan Mulford gets the start on the hill.
Dominican Summer League Cardinals defeated the DSL Nationals 4-3 with only six hits. Erik Pena produced a double and Raffy Ozuna, Juan Herrera and Fred De Jesus each drove in a run.
Jose Moreno went 4.2 innings as he only gave up two hits and struck out three while walking two. Emmanuel Solano (1-0) got the victory with 2.1 innings on the mound and allowed two hits and tow runs. Oneider Diaz stepped in and fanned two batters in two innings of hitless work.
Johnson City (Appy League) begins games on Thursday.
