Main Event Preview
Ciryl “Bon Gamin” Gane has moved up to the third spot in the heavyweight division with his high level of fighting. In his recent battle, he put up a unanimous decision win against another top fighter in Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
Now with a perfect 8-0 record in his MMA career, five of those came from the UFC. The 31-year-old has built himself to be a powerhouse figure who also happens to move as an NFL edge rusher would.
Gane has focused primarily on being an excellent technical striker who also performed well in kickboxing along with Muay Thai. It has taken some time for him to become good at grappling, but he is not too bad with three of his eight victories coming by submission.
Alexander Volkov is not far behind Gane in the heavyweight rankings, as he is currently at the fifth spot. His last battle was a TKO victory against Alistair Overeem.
Volkov has built a reliable resume for sports bettors, as he was an M-1 Global and Bellator heavyweight champion. On top of that, he has gone 7-2 in the UFC since his debut in 2016.
“Drago” promotes a high level striking ability and lands 4.88 significant strikes per minute while taking on just 2.48. Gane has similar numbers that are better, but only has five fights compared to the nine that Volkov has in the UFC.
Gane looked a little stiff against Rozenstruik, like he was afraid at times to let loose, but still won the striking battle of 102-42. This might not work out well against Volkov since he likes to create pressure on his opponents rather than just adjust to the tempo.
Volkov has shown his issues when fighting against top wrestlers such as Curtis Blaydes. In addition, he also struggled against a powerful brute with lights out knockout power in Derrick Lewis.
When breaking down this fight, Gane might not match up well against Volkov when it comes to striking back and forth. Volkov has the reach on him and is just as good if not better at kickboxing than Gane.
Volkov and Gane are roughly the same age but the experience level is what separates the two of them. Volkov has experienced 41 battles in his career compared to the eight fights for Gane.
When you look at everything on paper, Volkov does not appear to be the underdog here. Look for him to “upset” Gane with a much needed victory to allow him a potential title shot down the line.
Ciryl Gane vs Alexander Volkov Prediction: Volkov wins via TKO at +130
