Lee Petty, the patriarch of the racing family, won the inaugural Daytona 500 on February 22, 1959, defeating Johnny Beauchamp.
2001: Also known as “Black Sunday”, or the “darkest day in NASCAR“, as Dale Earnhardt died in a crash on the final lap. Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were running first and second on the final lap, while Earnhardt Sr. was third. In turn 4, Earnhardt lost control after making contact from Sterling Marlin, and crashed into the outside wall, taking Ken Schrader with him. Earnhardt suffered a fatal basilar skull fracture. Waltrip would win.

Chase Elliott enters with 12/1 odds to win. The familiar #9 will begin his fourth season in his Chevy. He is not a rook anymore for sure and is a good driver like his father. Look for him to come out on top to start the season.
These two drivers are high on my list and present a decent chance to make some money. Y
Kyle Busch 14-1
Martin Truex Jr. 14-1
Our longshot for this race is Erik Jones at 22/1 odds. With those odds, he is worth a play. In 2018, he finished eighth or better in 13 of 21 races and has sniffed near the finish line several times. He hasn’t fared well at the Daytona 500 but has won other races on this track.
