Allen Iverson is arguably the most known Sixer of all time. The 76ers drafted him No. 1 in 1996 in a draft class featuring players like Ray Allen, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash. Iverson played 10 years with the Sixers before he was traded to the Denver Nuggets during the 2006-07 season.
Iverson loves Sixers (and the city of Philadelphia) and the feeling seems to be mutual. So, why haven’t the 76ers offered him a job?
A Sixer for Life
Recently, Iverson spoke with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report and discussed things such as his Top 5 Players, a new business venture and more. However, one of the most talked about things of this interview was Iverson’s take on getting a role with the Sixers.
“I’m a Sixer for life,” Iverson said. “I got Sixer blood pumping through me. Everybody knows that I want to help that organization. I been retired, what, 11 years? I don’t know how I’m not a part of that staff in some kind of way.
Iverson mentioned that his role wouldn’t matter, and he’d be happy as a consultant.
“Even if it’s [as a consultant], I will be the happiest in the world and the money thing ain’t got nothing to do with it. It’s just me being me and me being a Sixer and wanting to help. I don’t know why nothing has been put in place for me. I still love y’all. Don’t get it twisted. It’s all love and it ain’t never going nowhere. But it’s just something I don’t understand.”
The Sixers are in an interesting position. They were first in the Eastern Conference last season but had a disappointing playoff run. And they’re in an ongoing conflict with one of their star players in Ben Simmons.
It is also worth mentioning that the Sixers have employed four different heads of basketball operations since 2016. Daryl Morey currently has the position and joined Philadelphia after stepping down as Houston Rockets general manager in 2020.
The Sixers are finding their identity, and with the potential loss of Simmons, their process becomes more complex. Could Iverson step in and help?
Is Iverson the Answer?
Iverson is one of the greatest Sixers ever. He’s second in All-time points for them (Hal Greer is first), third in All-time assists, and has his jersey retired by Philadelphia. He’s also a Hall-of-Famer and won MVP during his time with the Sixers. So, why not give him a chance?
“I’ve forgotten more basketball than some people know, and I know I can help an organization get better,” Iverson said. “I know so much about the ins and out in basketball, and not just talent-wise as far as who’s good, who’s not.
Stephen A. Smith of ESPN spoke on the Sixers’ treatment of Iverson and made it clear that they owe Iverson. And, he may be right.
Iverson eats, sleeps, and breathes Philadelphia. And it’s about time Philly gives him a chance.
