The 2018-2019 NBA season is about to begin. Some of the coaches hung onto their jobs last year by the skin of their teeth. Anyone that has a slow start from this list below may get the honor of being fired first this year. For a point of reference, last year Phoenix fired Earl Watson (+400 odds) after losing the first three games of the season as was the Bucks coach Jason Kidd fired very shortly with odds at +800.
Scott Brooks Washington Wizards +300
Terry Stotts Portland Trail Blazers +400
Fred Hoiberg Chicago Bulls +500
Kenny Atkinson Brooklyn Nets +500
Dave Joerger Sacramento Kings +600
Doc Rivers Los Angeles Clippers +700
Tyronn Lue Cleveland Cavaliers +1000
Michael Malone Denver Nuggets +1500
Nate McMillan Indiana Pacers +1500
Alvin Gentry New Orleans Pelicans +1500
Billy Donovan Oklahoma City Thunder +1500
A few of these names jump out at me and the best value appears at the bottom. Billy Donovan has not produced as management has wanted. In his first season, he was up 3 games to 1 on the Golden State Warriors with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook on his roster and they blew it. The following year he lost Durant but added they added some depth the last two years and nothing of significance has happened.
There are five teams for the north looking to get into the playoffs as Denver, Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Portland and Utah fight all season. It is a good bet to believe the first fired comes from this group. With that said, however, keep n eye on the Timberwolves and the sticky situation, they have involving Jimmy Butler and Tom Thibodeau. If management wants to keep Butler, things are bad for Thibs.
Also, not on the list, is Luke Walton. I mention him because LeBron James always takes over his team. We shall see as I don’t expect him to be first fired but you just never know.
