The final game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals is tonight in Boston. Up until this point, home field advantage has been extremely important in this series between the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards. In this article, we take a look at just how important home court will be on Monday night for the Celtics.
Looking Back at the Series
The Celtics and Wizards are currently tied at 3 games each in the playoffs with the home team winning on their home court all 6 games. The home team has not only won the game straight up but they have also covered the spread in each game in the postseason.
Looking deeper into this series, the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards also played each other 4 times in regular season. In those 4 games, the home team won each game on their home court and also covered the spread.
That basically means that the last 10 games that the Celtics and Wizards played each other, no matter where the game was played, the home team was victorious both straight-up and against the spread. That is an impressive stat trend since tonight’s game is being played at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Games Played in Boston
In the 3 games played in Boston, in the postseason, the Celtics have won by an average of 14.66 points per game. In the 2 regular season games played in Boston, the Celtics won by an average of 8.5 points per game. On the opposite side of the ball, in the 3 postseason games in Washington, the Wizards won by 15.66 points per game, while the 2 home games during the regular season, the Wizards won by an average of 20 points per game.
But just how much of a benefit does the home court play? Well, think about this…..the Washington Wizards have not won a playoff game in Boston in all of 2010’s, they didn’t win any playoff games in Boston in the 2000’s, they didn’t even win a single playoff game in the 1990’s. The last time the Washington won in Boston, they were called the Washington Bullets and that was in 1982! That means it has been 35 years since a team from Washington won a road game in Boston in the playoffs!
Boston Money in Game 7’s
In addition to the home field advantage, you have to take into consideration that the Boston Celtics have the best record in Game 7 games in all of the NBA. They are 20-9 all time, in Game 7’s, so this won’t be easy to beat them in Boston, in a Game 7! On top of that all-time record, when they are playing at home in Game 7, the Celtics are 18-4!
One thing the Wizards have going for them is Celtics head coach Brad Stevens has never coached in a Game 7 playoff game but one has to ask themselves, does it really make a difference between coaching in Game 1 vs. Game 7? Some say it is more pressure, some say it shouldn’t matter.
Stats Say Bet Celtics in Game 7
There are a lot of stats that say the Celtics should win and there are a ton of trends to support playing against the Wizards but the stats and trends don’t mean anything if the players on the court don’t play along with the facts above. This fact is a certainty, this will be a great game with the winner having an even harder test ahead of them in the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
You can watch Game 7 Monday night at 8:00 PM ET from the TD Garden on TNT.
