Not only is the point guard position more important than ever, the position has also expanded past usually being the smallest player on the team. Players like Ben Simmons and Lebron James have expanded the position to a place of basketball ball IQ.
This furthers the fact that it’s harder to be a point guard in the NBA than it has been in the past. Being a top point guard in the NBA right now means having phenomenal scoring, passing, and basketball IQ ability while not being a liability on defense. These players surpass the standards of what a point guard should be.
Steph Curry
Obviously to start off this list we have to include one of if not the best point guard of all time. Curry continues to show he is an elite player as he keeps stacking more accomplishments onto his resume. After earning another championship and a finals MVP Steph Curry has truly done it all.
His accolades far surpass most players in the league racking up five championships, one finals MVP, 2 regular season MVPs, eight time all star, all time leader in three pointers, and 8 time all NBA selection. Some fans speculate when Curry will start to drop off.
Although he has shown no sign of his career slowing down, in the 2021-2022 season Curry averaged 26 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. After thirteen years in the league Steph Curry continues to dominate and be the best point guard in the league.
Luka Doncic
Luka Magic entered the league in 2018 and from then on has cemented himself as an elite level scorer that can run an offense.
When Doncic steps on the court he makes the impossible look easy. He has quickly become known for being an offensive juggernaut that teams will struggle to slow down.
Doncic, although not the most athletic player in the league, relies on his shooting touch and patience to toy with defenders.
Doncic also has something most players don’t and that’s reliance. This was put on display in the 2022 playoffs after going down 2-0 against the Suns.
Doncic would rally his team and push the series to seven games and take the Dallas Mavericks to the conference finals. Doncic has the drive and ability to dominate this league and at the age of 23 he has plenty of time to continue to improve.
Ja Morant
Morant is a rising point guard in the NBA and has taken the league by storm after winning rookie of the year. Improving exponentially every year since being drafted, Ja Morant has already cemented his name as a top point guard in the league.
In the 2021-2022 season Morant was able to cement this title through his leadership. In the past season Morant was considered a great point guard but not one that can lead his team to the playoffs.
This all changed when he led the Grizzlies to a 56 – 26 record and finished the year at the 2 seed. The young Grizzlies now look to make noise in the playoffs with their leader Ja Morant showing the way.
