• How much will Shanahan play Lance?
  • How much will Gruden play for his first team?
  • Which team has more to learn heading into the regular season?

In what used to be a bay area rivalry, the San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders will face each other for the first time since the Raiders left the city of Oakland. Albeit a preseason game, it will be interesting to see how many Raiders fans from Oakland will be at the game considering the game is just across the bay.

The two fan bases have never liked each other and I expect the animosity to continue in this one. Regardless of how much the starters will play on either side, I expect the outcome in this one to actually carry at least some relevance especially since each team plays in opposite conferences.

49ers Preview: Lance Getting His Last Push at Jimmy G

Technically, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has not yet named his team’s Week 1 starting quarterback. While we do expect the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo to ultimately get the nod, it is possible Shanahan wants to look at Lance one last time against the Raiders to make sure that Jimmy G is the best decision for the team.

So far, Lance has looked as good as Niners fans could have hoped in the first two preseason games. He has shown the ability to make plays that simply Garoppolo has not been able to. Jimmy G is probably the safer pick given he is the veteran with prior experience.

After all, he did lead San Francisco to the Super Bowl just two years ago. Lance however brings an entirely new dynamic to the squad that can lift the Niners over the hump. I would not be surprised to see Jimmy get the nod week 1 and have Lance take over the reins a few weeks later.

Raiders Preview: Gruden Trying to Flip the Script This Season

After the Raiders decided to give former coach Jon Gruden a ten-year contract, Las Vegas was clearly all in on Gruden’s vision. The problem is, the Raiders have not made the playoffs or even had a winning season in his first three years on the job.

Starting quarterback Derek Carr, has shown the ability to be a good quarterback in the league and his tailback Josh Jacobs has proven to be a force in the backfield. On the defensive side of the ball, they have invested high draft picks on the front seven which have not panned out yet.

If Gruden does not lead the Raiders to at least a winning season this year, there will be a lot of questions surrounding Jon’s ability to coach the modern NFL.

Odds & Free Betting Analysis for This NFL Game

With the over/under being set at 35.5 points, I like the under in this game. Generally, preseason games have shown to be more low-scoring compared to the regular season. The starters get limited playing time and there is less game planning going on which is something that often limits scoring on the offensive side of the ball.

I like the Niners covering the spread in this one as well at -3.5. Trey Lance should see a decent amount of snaps against the Raiders’ backup defenders. Given his talent, do not be surprised to see him score a few touchdowns.
