- How will the 49ers look coming back from a bye week?
- Can Carson Wentz continue to find his footing?
- Jimmy Garoppolo back under center for the 49ers
When the 49ers welcome the Colts back to Levi’s Stadium Sunday, they will have a familiar face playing quarterback, which brought them to the Super Bowl just two years ago. That man is Jimmy Garoppolo. After seeing that Trey Lance just isn’t ready to be an NFL quarterback yet, the red and gold will turn to their long-time signal-caller to get the job done. Coming off the bye week, San Francisco looks to snap a three-game losing skid.
As for the Colts, they got utterly embarrassed two Mondays ago, losing a 21-point fourth quarter lead to the Ravens and Lamar Jackson. Although that’s a game they might not be too fond of looking back, the Colts showed some really good things that game. They proved that their young receivers like Michael Pittman Jr and Zach Pascal could get it done, along with an up-and-coming star at running back, Jonathan Taylor. Indianapolis also picked up a 31-3 win against the Houston Texans last week.

Colts Preview: Wentz Improving Weekly
The Colts had a nice win last week, and they saw their starting quarterback get things going posting a 127.7 QBR and air the ball out for 11.2 yards per attempt, with young versatile receivers that should be their game plan weekly.
As for what that means against this 49ers defense, things could get testy. The passing defense of the 49ers is one of their strengths, holding opponents to 216 YPG (7th) and 7.0 YPA (9th), but the return of T.Y. Hilton could prove beneficial.
One thing that Colts fans can be happy about is that Carson Wentz won’t see as much pressure this week as in the past. The 49ers are 24th in the league when it comes to getting to the quarterback, something to take advantage of with extra time in the pocket.
49ers Preview: Lock Down the Run Gaps
One of the keys to this game for San Francisco will be stopping Taylor. Last week the second year running back had another huge game putting up 145 yards, two touchdowns and 10.4 yards per carry. As for the 49ers, their run defense allows 4.3 YPC and 113.2 yards per game, ranking around the middle of the league in both categories.
Where this game could get turned on its head for the 49ers is in the red zone. So far this season, they are one of the best teams at converting red zone opportunities into scores. So far, they rank second in that category and 25th overall when it comes to third down. This is critical because the Colts have struggled mightily in red zone defense, ranking 18th in touchdowns and 20th in getting opponents off the field on third down.
Odds & Free Betting Analysis for Colts vs 49ers
Although this game can go either way, I think if the Colts can do even 75% of what they did on the ground last week against the Texans, they run away with this one late. Although the 49ers are coming off a bye week and seem to have got a bit healthier, this is still a massive trap game. The Colts have looked much better this season than their record indicates, and a lot will be riding on this game for them.
